Political economy of production-consumption: Justice and power in relations across space and time

The dynamics underlying the production and consumption of food, energy, water, emissions, and anything that we use have been identified as core drivers of global environmental problems, and are implicated in unequal development. Systems of production-consumption in modern world capitalism implicate a range of unequal and power-laden social relations, mediated by institutional actors such as nation states, multinational corporations, labor unions, and civil society. These relations link nation-states, communities and social forces/entities which are positioned very differently in relation to the causes and consequences of, and responses to, global environmental problems. This panel aims to reinvigorate a conversation about the social relations of unjust and unequal production-consumption systems within global development and environmental studies, at a time when transforming and even degrowing these systems is becoming an urgent ecological priority. Underlying this effort is an inclusive political economy approach that pays close attention to power and, thus, the interface of structural inequalities and injustice.

We welcome theoretical and empirical papers that examine the relations of production-consumption systems at local, regional, and transnational levels. Thematic foci could include a focus on waged and unwaged work, extractivism, (de)colonial relations, ecologically (un)equal exchange, amongst others. We particularly welcome papers that integrate Indigenous, Decolonial, Black, Intersectional, Abolitionist, Queer and Marxist Feminist lineages of thought, or incorporate activist and engaged research approaches into the work. Our aim is to generate a lively discussion about the relational politics of transforming production-consumption systems.

Please send a proposal of 150-250 words to Dimitris Stevis at  dimitri...@colostate.edu and copy Manisha Anantharaman at ma...@stmarys-ca.edu. To allow enough time for consideration and response before the June 1 deadline please send your proposal by end of your day, Friday, May 19.
