Hi Peter and GEP-ed Friends: Thanks, Peter, for sharing this absolutely necessary intervention from Chuks. It is incredible that in this day and age Chuks and others have to remind folx that Africans and other Peoples of the Global South and Indigenous Nations speak for themselves. I believe I speak for many fellow travelers to say that we are grateful to you, Chuks.

As one of the initiators of the International Non-Use Agreement on Solar Geoengineering (https://www.solargeoeng.org/), I must also assert that I do not demand/advocate for an outright ban on solar geoengineering research. To the best of my understanding, our work in the Non-Use community is directed to counter the creeping advocacy of solar-geo deployment. At the same time, we also want to draw attention to the fact that some climate scientists seek to exploit their legitimacy as scientists to advocate for solar geo deployment, including the authors of the National Academies report, which suggested investing research funds into developing aircraft and even figuring out the design of the nozzle needed to spray SO2 dirt in the upper stratosphere.

Here are a couple of relevant pieces that speak to these arguments: 1 https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abj3679 2 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09644016.2021.1989214; 3 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09644016.2022.2156182 (Fun fact: the unilateral developments we predicted in 1 & 2, happened by the time we wrote #3)

My best wishes,
Prakash
