Dear Colleagues,

With COP29 just around the corner, we’re excited to share the first ACHIEVE Policy Brief, with timely recommendations to enhance the integrity of UNFCCC-registered cooperative climate initiatives.

The Policy Brief, attached here, dives into key areas for improvement—including transparency, accountability, and effectiveness—and offers insights into challenges and opportunities in today’s voluntary climate action landscape.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, thoughts, or would like to discuss any part of the brief. We’d love to hear from you.

Warm regards,

Sander

Dear colleagues,

I’m reaching out to invite you to contribute to a section I’m co-chairing at the upcoming ECPR Conference (26–29 August 2025, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki).

Our section, Strengthening Integrity of Voluntary Climate Action in Turbulent Times, will explore the vital role of non-state and subnational actors in advancing climate and sustainability goals amid the intersecting challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, economic volatility, and political polarization.

We are seeking papers that address:

  • The polarized societal context of voluntary climate action,
  • Integrity and accountability within voluntary climate initiatives, and
  • Governance and policy mechanisms that strengthen voluntary climate action.

Panels are envisaged as follows (4-5 papers each):

  • The Role of Voluntary Climate Action in a Politically Polarized Environment - Strategies to foster collaboration, engage diverse stakeholders, and build trust in voluntary climate commitments amid rising populism.
  • Achieving Higher Accountability, Credibility, and Integrity in Voluntary Climate Action - Standards and frameworks for accountability, addressing challenges of greenwashing, voluntary carbon markets, and evolving integrity criteria.
  • Governance and Policies to Strengthen Interactions for Voluntary Climate Action - Examining governance and policies at all levels that could strengthen voluntary climate action integrity and alignment with global goals.

If you’re interested, we would appreciate a quick expression of interest by Friday 29 November, in a reply to this email.

Subsequently, you can submit an abstract (200-250 words) to me (sande...@ru.nl) by Friday 3 January 2025. We will communicate our decision shortly thereafter.

I have attached the full call for papers to this email. Feel free to reach out with any questions. I look forward to the opportunity to see you at the ECPR Conference!

Kind regards,

Sander
