Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Africana Studies
The Department of Africana Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for three full-time, tenure track positions in the Africana Studies Department. Since its inception 50 years ago, the Africana Studies Department has made important contributions to the study of history, politics, and literature; of ancient and contemporary culture including the arts, religion, and socio-economic sciences; and of economic development and the broad dimensions of public policy that affect the societies and welfare of people of African descent. Now, as the department looks ahead to its fiftieth anniversary, it seeks faculty who will chart its course forward as an integral part of the region’s most diverse public university. Two positions will be at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. Candidates at this senior rank must show evidence of administrative experience and/or readiness to serve as Department Chair. The third is an open rank position. Start date to be determined in consultation with the selected candidates.
Fields of specialization are flexible within Africana Studies. They can include but are not limited to: Black/Africana History, African diaspora literature, Africana religion, community and economic development, public policy in Black communities, global Black/Pan-African movements, Black feminist theory and practice, Caribbean studies, urban planning in the African diaspora, post-colonial theory, and Black/Africana fine and performing arts.
Required qualifications:
All candidates should have a PhD in a relevant field. Appointments at the senior level require significant teaching experience, an excellent record of scholarship, an active research agenda, and a commitment to service and community engagement. A junior level appointment requires substantial promise for developing a strong scholarly record and evidence of the potential for excellence in teaching, and a commitment to service and community engagement. Interdisciplinary research interests and the ability to teach across disciplinary lines will be considered an advantage.
