Call for papers: social movements opposing climate policy

Dear Colleagues,
We invite your applications for a workshop on "Social Movements Opposing Climate Policy in Comparative Perspective" to be held at Brown University, February 20-21, 2026. This workshop is co-sponsored by the William R. Rhodes Center for International Economics and Finance, the Climate Solutions Lab, and the Climate Social Science Network.
Decarbonization is a political project that entails potentially massive structural social change, transforming the value of resources, and the locus of power and status. As a result, we have seen many recent social movements emerge to oppose climate policy. But when, where, and how does decarbonization become a threat that is significant enough to spur mobilization?
We suggest combining a growth models approach with social movement theory to develop more nuanced predictions about this type of mobilization. We aim to bring together a community of scholars who can use these perspectives to augment an emerging body of scholarship on cases of climate policy opposition. We ask interested scholars to submit CVs and extended abstracts via this Google Form by August 1st, 2025. Limited support for conference travel will be provided for invited participants who cannot receive funding from their home institutions.
