Dear GEP-ed colleagues,

"RC24" is the Research Committee on Environment and Society, of the International Sociological Association (ISA). In conjunction with the ISA World Forum of Sociology, originally scheduled for Porto Alegre last year, but being held virtually 23-28 February, RC24 has organized a pre-conference on "Climate Justice and Transitions in the Global South", next Saturday, 20 February. The half-day event is free. Your participation is welcome & invited!

Kind regards,
David Sonnenfeld

Subject: Please join RC24 Forum Pre-conference on Climate Justice and Transitions in the Global South Feb 20!

Dear friends and colleagues,

I would like to invite you to join us for our RC24 Pre-conference to the ISA Forum of Sociology, to be held Saturday, February 20, from 12-4PM Porto Alegre time.

This event will focus on Climate Justice and Transition in Global South regions, highlighting all of the important scholarship done by our Brazilian members, and including other scholars from the Global South. This event is free, registration for the ISA Forum is not required, and non-RC24 members are welcome to join us, so please feel free to share this invitation with colleagues.

In order to accommodate our virtual format, presenters have been asked to provide pre-recordings of their presentations in advance. They should all be available for viewing by February 16.

On the day of the event, presenters have been assigned to different panels, where they will provide a very brief summary of their presentation, and the remainder of time will be devoted to facilitated discussion. Presenters have been invited to participate in their preferred language, either English, Spanish, or Portuguese, and attendees may feel welcome to do so as well. We will have a number of multilingual volunteers assisting, and we will all do our best to reach shared understanding. If any of our multilingual members would like to assist with translation of participant questions during the event, please let me know!

Dr. Leila da Costa Ferreira, Professor of Sociology at the University of Campinas, will start us off with a keynote presentation. Dr. Ferreira’s excellent work on climate change and cities will likely be familiar to many of you.

Following this, we will hold four panels, on the following topics:

  • Progress in Urban Transitions in the Global South
  • Water: A Critical Resource
  • Risk, Disaster and Institutional Injustice
  • Agency for Climate Just Futures

Please register for the event here: https://isarc24.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=2da0d12f9e05ca0b43592f710&id=8e9d0d8ff1&e=dd837984e6

Registrants will receive an access link to the pre-recorded presentations, a program schedule, and an invitation to participate on Zoom. If you do not already have Zoom installed on your computer, you may wish to do so in advance of the pre-conference. Please be aware that the event will be recorded, and the recording may be shared widely.

Sincerely,

Debra Davidson
