Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Geography is a teaching and research Department located in the College of Arts & Sciences.
Position Summary
The Research Associate will explore the stakeholder engagement environment in current North Carolina fisheries management processes. Stakeholders include commercial and recreational fishers, coastal community members, businesses, general North Carolina population, among others. The RA will: conduct a review of current engagement processes that the State uses to interact with stakeholders, identify stakeholder participation trends across the 13 identified species; summarize management transparency; and provide recommendations on strategies that contribute to robust participation practices that align with the stated goals and/or aspirations of fisheries managers and stakeholders. 75% – Implement the state-wide questionnaire and institutional analysis of the North Carolina fisheries system, including analysis, report writing and dissemination of findings (see detailed points below) 10% – Project management, including the development of progress and budget reports 5% – Participate in weekly and quarterly team meetings 5% – Coordinate with Wade and Havice Labs 5% – Other duties related to the project that may be assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in administering large-scale questionnaires across multiple groups * Strong research and writing skills * Proven organizational and project management skills * Demonstrated capacity to perform statistical data analysis on large data sets * Experience working independently and within interdisciplinary teams * Demonstrated commitment to promoting diverse, equitable, and inclusive environments
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ph.D., M.Sc., M.A. or equivalent in Geography, Sociology, Public Policy, Anthropology, Natural Resources, or related field. Candidates near degree completion are encouraged to apply. * Demonstrated experience working in Mid-Atlantic fisheries management contexts of the United States or similar context. * Experience in science communication and the ability to disseminate results to a diverse audience * Experience in leading or contributing to preparing white papers, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
The successful candidate can elect to live in the Chapel Hill/ Research Triangle area, the Outer Banks area, or to work remotely. If remote, the candidate will be responsible for occasional data collection events and team meetings in Chapel Hill or at sites in coastal North Carolina (roughly three 3-4 day trips over the course of the project).
