The Earth Commons: Georgetown Institute for Environment and Sustainability (Graduate School of Arts and Sciences), and the Department of Sociology (Georgetown College of Arts and Sciences), invite applications for a joint faculty position in environmental sociology, starting in Fall 2022. This new hire is part of a broader cluster of faculty hires complementing existing expertise in the areas of environment and sustainability at Georgetown University.

This is a tenured position with open rank, Associate or Full Professor. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Sociology or closely related field. We seek applicants with a strong research background dedicated to producing research of excellent quality in the area of environmental sociology. Candidates should also have demonstrated teaching excellence in related topics. Experience in course and/or curriculum development and innovation is expected.

This search for an environmental sociologist with a focus on the human dimensions of our environmental challenges is central to Georgetown’s efforts to be an environmental leader in research and in action. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, environmental sociology and global environmental politics, environmental stewardship and engagement, conservation science, environmental justice, and climate-related decision making. Scholars who employ mixed methodologies including network methods are encouraged to apply. We are looking for a senior scholar with a robust record of research publications in high-profile outlets and external funding. The ideal candidate will also have a demonstrated track record of communicating academic research to the general public and to policymakers. They should also have experience teaching students using experiential and active learning techniques.

The faculty member would contribute to the teaching and research of The Earth Commons (Eco Institute), and the Department of Sociology (Georgetown College). The Eco Institute is a rapidly growing entity that will eventually be located on the downtown capital campus. The Eco Institute is also in the design phase of a new undergraduate major and is about to launch a new MS program with the McDonough School of Business in Environment and Sustainability Management.
