Job Title: Environmental Social Sciences Research Assistant [20h/week]
Project Title: Community Organizations and Environmental Policy on American Coasts
Position Description: Researchers at Princeton University, Northeastern University and Texas A&M University are seeking a research assistant to support a new interdisciplinary project investigating how community organizations (homeowners associations, neighborhood associations, etc.) shape individual and collective behaviors around natural disaster response and preparedness. The research assistant will work directly with Dr. Sara Constantino and Dr. Alicia Cooperman on a mixed-methods research project engaging with coastal communities on the Texas Gulf Coast, in Miami and other locations. The ideal candidate can come from a wide variety of academic backgrounds but should be highly motivated and interested in social science, public policy, and environmental issues.
The research assistant will assist with detailed site analysis, including background research about future research case studies, identifying local stakeholders for qualitative interviews, literature review, developing qualitative interview guides, and conducting qualitative interviews and/or focus groups during site visits. The research assistant will use existing quantitative datasets to guide site selection and background research. There may be potential for co-authorship based on project work.
The position is ideal for someone considering a research career in qualitative or quantitative social science and interested in applying research to address social problems (e.g. climate change and inequality) who already has considerable experience with qualitative and/or quantitative data analysis. This position offers ample opportunities to learn and develop research skills and receive professional mentorship (e.g. in preparation for applying to a PhD or Postdoctoral Research position) from interdisciplinary academics working across several institutions.

Time/Timeline/Location:
- Average of 20h/wk. Some weeks will be less, and others (such as during site visits) will be more.
- Start in May or June 2022. The position is for a 3-6 month commitment, though with a possibility of extending up to a year, depending on mutual interest and project focus.
- Ability to work remotely except during site visits (date/time TBD based on research team schedules).
Compensation: $20/hour. Paid as an independent contractor.
Required Skills:
- Detail oriented, problem solver, conscientious, strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills
- Qualitative research (i.e. conducting interviews or focus groups, transcribing and analyzing interviews, qualitative analysis software e.g. nVIVO)
- Comfort with statistical analyses
- Quantitative research (i.e. identifying data sources, analyzing data in R (or equivalent) and/or spatial data in GIS)
- Site analysis (i.e. collecting data and contextual details related to specific sites, identifying key stakeholders)
- Ability to travel within United States for up to a week at a time
- B.A. or B.S. in related field
Additional Helpful Skills:
- Familiarity conducting literature reviews
- Experience preparing IRB protocols
- Experience with project management
- Knowledge of environmental social sciences / climate change literature
