Dear colleagues,

 

Let me bring to your attention the call for applications for up to 10 professorships at the new TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology - and offer some clarifications in light of numerous inquiries I have received.

The 10 positions, for which a single highly multidisciplinary "omnibus" search committee has been formed, are open with respect to both rank (from starting tenure track to advanced full professors) and with respect to social science disciplines, including but not limited to (in alphabetical order): anthropology, communication, economics, education, gender studies, political science, psychology, public policy, science & technology studies, sociology, urban planning, and even philosophy/ethics, history and law.

 

The TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology was created in October 2021 through the merger of the TUM School of Governance, the TUM School of Education, and the Munich Center for Technology and Society (MCTS, now the Department of Science and Technology Studies), each of which now constitutes a department of the School.  The overarching objective of this inter-/multi-disciplinary search is to expand and strengthen research and teaching at the intersection of any of the social sciences and technology, both broadly conceived.  It is expected that each applicant will explain in his/her application how s/he bridges social science expertise and research interests in technology, ideally including past and future contributions to one or more of the topical issue areas of particular interest to the search committee, as specified in the call:

 

·        Technological transformation of society
·        Sustainable mobility and energy systems
·        Urban spaces
·        Medicine and health

·        Diversity, equity, and inclusion  

 

Note that these issue areas, too, are to be understood broadly. So "technological transformation of society" includes, inter alia:

- technology governance

- politics of innovation and/or innovation policy

- regulatory politics and policy

- transnational consequences of technological changes etc.

 

There is *no* pre-determined distribution of the 10 faculty position across the three departments. The committee seeks to identify a diverse set of excellent scholars with a variety of disciplinary backgrounds and substantive foci. Their departmental affiliation within the school is to be determined as part of the hiring process, only.
