A Conversation With Science and Policy Leaders on Research in Rapid Response Options for Climate

As climate risks escalate, policymakers are seeking information on the potential and risks of technological interventions to rapidly arrest or reverse warming. Early focus centers on approaches recommended as priorities for research in assessments from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and U.K. Royal Society for increasing the reflection of sunlight from the atmosphere by dispersing particles to reflect sunlight directly or change the reflectivity of clouds ("solar climate intervention" or "solar geoengineering").
In a groundbreaking dialogue, U.S. political and scientific leaders will discuss motivations, plans and considerations for research in solar climate intervention, including emerging federal agency efforts, recent Congressional proposals, a new National Academy of Sciences study and developments in the United Nations. The discussion will include consideration of how research in solar climate intervention might influence international cooperation and the overarching imperative of reducing greenhouse gases.
