Potential impact of stratospheric aerosol geoengineering on sea surface salinity in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean

Authors: José Houénoukpo Agada, Casimir Yélognissè Da-Allada, Marius Bocco-Koube, et al.
Synopsis: This study uses GLENS simulations under RCP8.5 to assess the impact of Stratospheric Aerosol Geoengineering (SAG) on sea surface salinity (SSS) in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic. Under RCP8.5, SSS drops year-round in Gulf of Guinea regions, but under SAG, SSS remains stable or slightly increases. Seasonal analysis shows that SAG offsets freshwater-driven salinity declines. Key drivers include changes in rainfall, river runoff (Niger, Congo), and vertical mixing, varying by region and season.

Time Left Estimates Based on Critical Feedback/Loops Trends: Proposed Annual Solar Geoengineering IPCC Pathways as CO2 Goals Falter

Authors: Alec Feinberg
Synopsis: Without solar geoengineering, feedback loops may drive 75% of global warming by 2100. Current CO₂ reduction efforts fall short, risking irreversible climate tipping points by 2075–2125 (RCPCritical). This study proposes mild Annual Solar Geoengineering Pathways (ASGPs) including Earth Brightening, Arctic SAI, and L1 Sunshades to buy time for mitigation. SG is 62% more efficient than CDR, yet remains underused amid rising urban heat and albedo decline. Urgent action is needed.

Climate Response of the Seven Homogeneous Monsoon Rainfall Regions of India Using the SOLAR Geoengineering Simulation Datasets

Authors: Akshay Kumar Sagar & Arun Chakraborty
Synopsis: This study evaluates the effects of solar geoengineering via SAI under moderate emission scenarios from 2035–2069, aiming to stabilize global temperatures near 1.5 °C. Using UKESM1 and CESM2 models, it analyzes atmospheric changes over seven Indian regions, finding significant shifts in temperature, specific humidity, and relative humidity—especially in Hilly Kash and Hilly Himalaya. Results support geoengineering as a potential climate mitigation strategy.

Digital Communications Officer at The Degrees Initiative | Deadline: 17 August 2025

"The Degrees Initiative is a UK-based NGO that builds the capacity of developing countries to evaluate solar radiation modification (SRM), a controversial proposal for reducing some impacts of climate change by reflecting sunlight away from the Earth."

Postdoctoral Position in Stratospheric Transport, Dynamics, and Aerosols at the University of Hawaii

"Dr. Hongwei Sun at the University of Hawaii at Manoa invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position to conduct innovative research on Stratospheric Transport, Dynamics, and Aerosols, with a focus on advancing fundamental atmospheric understanding of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)."

Sci-fi author Kim Stanley Robinson on Al, climate change, and the future of governance | Centre for Future Generation

"We asked Kim Stanley Robinson to reflect on how real-world events are catching up with the imagined futures of his book "Ministry for the Future". He explores the risks and potential of solar geoengineering, Al-assisted governance, and Europe's role in leading cooperative global action themes that are central to our work in real life.
The Centre for Future Generations is an independent think-and-do tank based in Brussels, dedicated to helping decision-makers navigate rapid technological change. Our mission is to ensure that emerging technologies serve the best interests of humanity."
