Hello,
I am writing a news story for Bloomberg Environment covering the report, with particular focus on food security. Would anyone like to see a copy and share a comment? Ideally someone with a special interest in the intersection of climate change and food security.

Many thanks!

Lou

Upping this again as I am filing the story in 2 hours, so whoever wants to contribute now is most welcome.
I only need a quick Skype call or a written paragraph.

Cheers

Personally I think it is inappropriate to comment on a rough draft that hasn’t gone through peer review, and would suggest waiting until the document has been released...

Hi Lou,
I am at the proposal stage of researching on the nexus between climate change and food security
and would be very interested in reading this.

Kind regards,

Evelyn

Dear all,

Better to wait for the final, approved SPM in my opinion. The SPM is undergoing significant revision right now following government comments – so will not look anything like whatever has been leaked. This (and any articles written about it) will likely just muddy the water, and add to the already significant burden of the authors at the approval plenary. Sorry that I can’t be more enthusiastic about your proposed article, Lou.

Cheers,

Pete

Dear Prof Smith,

I completely understand the argument. It's however undeniable that the story is already out, the person who leaked the draft (a scientist and pretty much involved in the process) is arguably convinced that the report is in solid shape - the difference, many would point out, will only lie in political games that certain actors will play upon approval of the final version, potentially watering down some points as we have seen happening very recently.
Is it in the public interest to let the readers see for themselves where politics interacts with or even stifles science? This is up for debate obviously.

Giving up on commenting is a perfectly respectable choice but it doesn't prevent a single story from coming out, it just deprives the conversation of that authoritative lens that only scientists can offer.

Hope that makes sense - even if i am sure we will have to agree to disagree!
Thanks anyway for the many responses,

Best,

Lou

Following up on my point above, you can see how these guys were not able to interview anyone - they just had to piece the thing together to the best of their ability.

I know the story is out, Lou – I saw it this morning. I guess many articles will follow.

But I haven’t seen an instance in the past when reports on an out-of-date leaked SPM has made approval easier. I don’t want to supress anything. I am just thinking about how this will affect the poor souls having to negotiate the text word-by-word in Geneva! If inaccurate reports lead to particular governments getting in to entrenched positions before the plenary, it is hardly going to improve the outcome.

Still – I recognise you have a job to do – I have said my piece so will leave it there.

Cheers,

Pete

News stories work on a whole different basis and timetable than academic scientific publications.....

Both are essential. News stories should lean heavily on peer-reviewed science, but they are an interpretation and synthesis ideally.....
