Dear Colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to 2 events on Monday 15 April at the upcoming EGU Meeting in Vienna, Austria.

A Townhall Meeting on the topic of ice preservation (a.k.a ice intervention or glacial geoengineering research). Room K1 at 19.00.

A Splinter meeting on modeling approaches to ice sheet conservation. Room: 2.83 (30) at Lunch 12:45–13:45. https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU24/session/50896.

There have been a variety of discussions and research on ice intervention in the past year, including two workshops in North America in Fall 2023, an AGU Town Hall, and several papers. There are currently several active works in this space, including laboratory studies, broad community papers advocating for and against basic research questions, and presumably specific scientific research studies yet to be published.

The purpose of this EGU Townhall Meeting is to broaden the community discussion on this emerging topic. The event will begin with a brief summary of the above-mentioned state-of-the-field. The majority of the Town Hall will be an open discussion for you and the community. The co-conveners (John Moore, Christine Dow, Brent Minchew, Ken Mankoff and Michael Wolovick) would like to welcome on stage people with additional and opposing views.

The purpose of the Splinter Meeting is to discuss simulation approaches and modeling experiments for this field, and is convened by John Moore, Christine Dow, and Rupert Gladstone.

If you’re working on a paper or project, please attend. We can share ideas, concerns, and plans for next steps (e.g., perhaps conveners for dedicated sessions at the next AGU and EGU).
