Showtime!

"The top climate change scientist for NOAA said he has received $4 million from Congress and permission from his agency to study two emergency—and controversial—methods to cool the Earth if the U.S. and other nations fail to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions."

Dear colleagues

for what it's worth I'll say it here although it really mostly concerns the person writing the headlines at the Scientific American: It is not a good idea on many levels to characterise any form of "geoengineering" – CO2-removal or solar radiation modification – as a Plan B.

A plan B implies abandonment of (failed) plan A, which in this case is not applicable.

Studying any form of "geoengineering" means to start figuring out whether we can tweak plan A to become a little less risky. There is no Plan B.

“… in a sign of how controversial the topic is, Fahey recommended changing the nomenclature from geoengineering to “climate intervention,” which he described as a “more neutral word.”

I expect Trump would be looking for a bit more oomph than a "more neutral word":     Lets Play Climate Roulette!  Everyone Wins!

Ummm, climate intervention is what we have been doing for about 250 years.

Maybe, but we haven’t had the conceit that it was planned, or that we know enough to titrate one or more pollutants against others.
