Dear Cyclists of the Realm,

The drive to succeed is relentless in our modern society and, thankfully, most of us have managed to avoid this embarrassment. I, for one, have been quite happy to soldier on with our beloved cycling events as-is with nary a change to be seen for decades. Indeed, after 23 years it looks to be a bit soon for wholesale changes but when our brewery friend John Moore at Barley John's decides to pull the plug from the transom, it's time to jump to the wharf and assume a different title. Hence my promotion to STO Emeritus.

Other plugs and drains:
  • The new STO is Noah Holzer; Noah will be assisted by his fiancé Jess and father Andy. A fine crew, this, and you can rest assured the 2 finest (and only) full-on English cycling events shall continue unabated long into the future. I will continue in the background with Collector Prints, Tourbooks and the odd (quite odd actually) ride reports.
  • The ABCE web page has been updated with the new locations and routes laid out by Noah. Noah's email contact info is there as well. For now, we are anchored at Urban Growler in St Paul for the Friday reception, Saturday continues with Merlin's Rest and the Sunday cruise is at Bang Brewing across the parking lot from Urban Growler. The interesting concept is both breweries are within a quiet conversation of each other.
  • Thus, we are entering a new era of Cycling and our mission is unchanged: "To revive the heart and soul of English cycle touring one pastry at a time."
From Noah:

• We should meet at the Urban Growler on Friday for our traditional pre-event get-together.
• The Saturday route can be found here: https://www.bikemap.net/en/r/13411496/#11.41/44.9197/-93.1751. My rough timetable has us leaving at 9:00, having lunch around 11:30, and returning to Merlins around 17:00. This is pretty much the same as we have done in the past though with a little jaunt into Minneapolis.
• For Sunday we can convene at the dirt parking lot on the northwest side of Bang Brewing for the Cycle Jumble. We should depart just before 10:30 for the Gentlemen's tour; route here https://www.bikemap.net/en/r/13411545/#12.72/44.97517/-93.16664. The Pastry Joust will follow shortly and we can stop at the halfway point for a restroom break at the Lake Como Pavilion. On the way back there are some unused railroad tracks and a steam locomotive where we can stop for our traditional group photo. Bang Brewing and their partner, Pastel Artisan Pizza, have both graciously agreed to be open at 13:00 for us to have lunch and our traditional program.

Best along the path,
Jon Sharratt, Shirt-Tail Organiser Emeritus

Damn I hate change. Very well, we start a new era.

It has been a long and glorius path you have laid down for us with the 3ST and ABCE.  Thank you for all your enthusiasm and hard work.  You and Noel set the pace; and encouraged the faithful Cyclists of the Realm to enjoy our British steeds through beer and pie stops, preparing our misc two-wheelers for events and other riding, neighborhood touring, and sharing of knowledge of things Whitworth and Sturmey Archer.   We are better for it.

Thanks, Jon, and have fun, Noah.

Jon and friends,
This is, indeed, big news. Huge! Us traditionalists tend to have problems with change, but I hope this will be a good change all around. Jon certainly has earned and deserves a chance to step back a bit and enjoy these rides stress free, as he has allowed the rest of us to do for all these years. He also deserves our hearty thanks. Jon helped create and shepherd along not only some fabulously unique bicycling events, but he and his accomplices have done so in a way that fosters a noteworthy spirit of kindness and generosity -- no small accomplishment in an increasingly mean and angry world. In my 17 circuits around Lake Pepin, I've always found the gathering to be a refreshing restoration of faith in humanity, not to mention in the engineering marvel that is the Sturmey Archer 3-Speed Hub.

So, thank you Jon. All the best to you! And welcome, Noah, Jess and Andy. Thank you for stepping up. I look forward to riding in your fine company for many years to come.

Cheers!

Thank you Bob and thanks to all the other Nutters that have expressed their appreciation. Melanie and I will be able to ride a little slower, chat a little longer and maybe enter the Brew-Up competition.

Best along the path,
Jon Sharratt, STO Emeritus

Howdy Sir John, STO emeritus
Weighing in here from Quebec City. Thank you for all your hard work creating and running the 3-speed tour and the ABCE. I’ve done a 1/2 dozen tours and several ABCE’s and have always had a great time. I have been involved with planning and running enough events to appreciate the time and effort that is required to have a successful event.
Thank you and Melanie again for your time and efforts.
Best along the trail,
John Hardy

John, I do not know how to thank you, when I try to write it just doesn’t work, so thank you.

Welcome to Noah and Jess! People always say things like you’ve got big shoes to fill which just sounds negative to me but I said it so I can say that you already have shoes and they are shoes that you two dance in, I’ve seen it! So I’m looking forward this future.

Now regarding French parts on British bicycles I think Noah is a Gentleman and would not, no he would not but now Jess, oh, I could see that, I think she’ll stir that pot. Perfect complimentary couple to guide us.

I vividly remember the broken, half moon French crank, and the struggle it caused that handsome lad.

Who, learned his lesson.

There are spare cranks, and cotters in Maria’s Ford, next to the beer. Along with a suitable cotter press, used every year.

The Boy Scout in me, lives on.
