One of the reasons why I have used GEDitCOM for years to back up my tree on Ancestry is that I can use it to generate very nice charts to illustrate the relationship between any two people in the tree.

But now, for the first time ever, I have noticed a glitch that sometimes occurs when the two people have a 'step' relationship.

Below are a few screenshots that illustrate the problem.

The underlying facts are:
(a) Mary Ann Hume's parents are John Hume and Jane Mary Gibbison.
(b) Sarah Jane Hume's parents are (the same) John Hume and Mary Stevens.
(c) Sarah Jane McDougal's mother is Mary Ann Hume.

The first chart below is correct, and is GEDitCOM's standard way of showing a step relationship, but the others just ignore the step factor.

Can this be fixed somehow?

Regards,
Sue Ahrens

1 Sarah Jane Hume to Sarah Jane McDougal CORRECT (usual way to show step-aunt).png2 Sarah Jane McDougal to Sarah Jane Hume WRONG (should say Stepmother above Sarah Jane Hume).png3 Mary Ann Hume and Sarah Jane Hume WRONG (both should say Stepmother).png

I will work on it. I created a small file with the connections you described and see the same thing. The chart does get the right relationship in both directions (aunt or niece) but shows the wrong connection between the two branches. There are two fixes:

1. Remove Mary Stevens and Jane Mary Gibbison from charts. John Hume is the unambiguous common ancestors. The two spouses need qualification.

2. Insert "Step" in the ones that miss it now

I will see what works best. I prefer #2 if works out.

Thanks, John. I would also prefer #2, if possible.

I have it fixed and will be in next posting (after a couple more feature requests).

As far as I can tell, it only happened when branch on the left has only one person and one of the listed parents is a step parent. Longer branches got "step" indication correct.
