I just received 5 kg of ABS filament and find that the cocoon heat bead does not cope with the high temp.

Hi Robert

Have you used ABS before with your printer(s)?

What do you mean “doesn’t cope”?   Can’t get up to temperature or does it get too much bow (bend)?   I do my ABS with the bed at 90C and it is (just) OK.

/Jim

I am about to go buy some ABS filament from BilbyCNC (they have a shop in Spring Hill that is open Sat morning), so will be interested to see if my bed heats up enough too.

(They have metal PLA as well in 180 gram mini rolls, so might grab a few different types).

I have some good results with ABS then it fails or lifts.

I now run the bed on 95C and the filament on 240C

The corners lift when I print a solid peace.

They then need extra support in the design.

Yes , true I tried to run on 110 C and had lifting. 90 to 95 C seems ok.

I had major improvement when I changed software.
There seem to be two different Cura programs.
One is form Lutzbot and the one I use now is from Ultimaker.

Aldi cocoon printer settings

And I had purchased my ABS 1Kg in China and Hobby King , but the rolls are all the same. They where delivered within 4 days as they all come from Chester Hill Sydney. (Where I used to life).

I had to design a new spool holder as the ABS spools have a much larger hole.
You find it in TINKERCAD. Look for

abs-spool-adapter-cocoon-create

You have to sign in. I am about to print this design.

The bed goes up to 103C.
Now on 95 C i still get lifting.
Will try your setting at 90 next.

You tear your hear out when you see how I stuff around with this.

They are great when they work. But when they don't ....I spend 4 days in fixing the problem.

Well having time off for now.
I need a break.

Hi Robert
I know what you mean. It's the main reason that I stopped mucking around with my 3D printer as it was taking far too much of my time.
At the time I figured that it was because I had a cheap printer. Now I'm not too sure...
My hope is that the next time I revisit the 3D printing world, things have moved along a bit more.

For what it's worth, i print PLA at 70c bed with a 15 line brim and get no lifting.  Not sure about ABS yet.  BUT I wonder, are you printing onto the cocoon print bed?  Have you tried cleaning it with some ISOCOL or similar to get rid of and fingerprints / oil?

Yes, too much of my valuable time. But I have knee problems and need a rest. I had over done climbing the ladder up and down for 300 screws.

This morning I had a breakthrough. After printing spaghetti I changed the settings to quick print settings.
By switching back, it resets the settings. All I did then was measure the filament size. It was 1.9 mm and changed it in the software and now it is working.

I use the wax and greas remover from Diggers. BUNNINGS product.

I got both printers working.
The other had fillament jamming the stepper.

I now print all day.
(Grumpy wife though)

Come to think of it.
The Techspace Aldi printer is not used as there is no fillament provided.
I print many things to upgrade the printer itself. SD card holder, rollers to prevent rubbing of belt against the alu.
Fillament guide, wrench (allen key) holder.
And Spring guide and wheels.
Robert

I now deleted SLACK completly from my phone.
Not only that I lost overview.

They want access to my microphone!!!!

I do not live in the modern ( don't care) world!

I design rings around the original design to prevent lifting.

The space has two rolls of pla on order. We also have the up mini which is sticked at the moment with clear abs. Mork is also working which uses 3.0mm. I think we have lots of black 3.0 in the filament box. Plenty of opportunity for printing at the space! Also i am not sure what the policy is for filament usage by members?

I'm assuming SLACK wants to have access to your microphone so that you can upload voice to the group.

Or perhaps they want to gather all ambient noise in your location to detect the presence of alien vorticies ?
