Good morning,

The Metro Transitional Center is a minimum-security facility for adult female felons which provides job training to those who have completed the necessary education and occupational requirements and are nearing the end of their sentence with the Georgia Department of Corrections.  The mission of the Metro Transitional Center is to assist their residents in making a successful transition back into the community by providing counseling as well as social and employment skills. The facility has three housing units and houses up to a maximum of 235 inmates. There are 1-2 new intakes per week. Since residents are always being admitted, there is always a need for items to be donated. When these women arrive at MTC, they are basically starting over from scratch and don't have even basic items that we all take for granted. As a new community partner, GAWL has been asked to do what we can to stand in the gap and help set these women up for success. Here's a list of the items they need:

ITEMS NEEDED NOW:

  • Pants size 16 (khaki, black, blue twill pants)
  • Pants size 26 (khaki, black, blue twill pants)
  • Thermal shirts size 2XX(any color)
  • Collared short sleeve shirts (size large and 2XX)
  • Socks (up to size 10)
  • 3 small umbrellas
  • 3 small clear tote bags
  • Marta cards
  • Tennis shoes (size 8)
  • Tennis shoes (size 10)
  • Soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste
  • MARTA Cards/ $5 Roundtrip (if possible, 1-2 month expiration date needed) These cards are given to the new residents going out to work for the first time. Many of them do not have access to any money as they begin to work and therefore, this $5.00 card is appreciated and needed.

ONGOING NEEDS FOR CLOTHING CLOSET:

  • Coats (up to size 4x; running low on XL and up)
  • T-Shirts (plain - especially size small and medium, but all sizes are needed)
  • Shoes (especially sizes 6-8, but larger sizes are also needed)
  • Casual Pants (all sizes)
  •  Jeans (all sizes)
  • Panties (all sizes)
  • Women dress pants (Size 20 and up)
  • Shorts (below knee)
  • Flip Flops ONLY (plain with no writing or designs)

ITEMS THEY CANNOT ACCEPT:

  • Leggings / Jeggings
  • Dresses
  • Skirts
  • Cargo Pants (pockets on outside of leg)
  • Short / Cropped Sweaters (bolero type)
  • Hooded tops, jackets, or coats
  • Camouflage
  • Sheer or see through tops
  • Sandals

Although they do not have any online registries or wish lists set up, you are welcome and encouraged to order items online and have them delivered directly to MTC. Please make sure they are marked Attn: Chief Counselor Susan Smith or Chaplain Stephenie Turnipseed. Metro Transitional Center is located at 1303 Constitution Road, Atlanta, GA 30316 and the main number is (404) 624-2380. You may drop off your donations anytime between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Please call ahead If you plan to stop by so that they will know when to expect you. If you are unable to bring in your own donations, please let them know and they will be happy to schedule a pickup of your items if necessary. The community service committee is also happy to collect donations and drop them off as well if needed.

Should you have any additional questions about the donation process,  please contact Counselor Susan Smith at (404) 624-2203 or Susan....@gdc.ga.gov and/or Chaplain Stephenie Turnipseed at (404) 624-2621 (she does not have voicemail) or stephenie....@gdc.ga.gov.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Good afternoon,

I previously told you about Metro Transitional Center and their need for donations for their incoming residents. Since they receive new intakes each week, we would like to continue helping them on an ongoing basis. They are currently in need of jeans (all sizes) and short sleeve summer shirts (all sizes). They do accept gently used clothing as well. If you would like to donate to the ladies at MTC, please contact Counselor Susan Smith at 404-624-2203 or susan....@gdc.ga.gov.  Thank you in advance for your donations.
