Low-income and working class DC residents are saddled with devastating debt collection suits. The economic impacts of the pandemic remain especially pronounced among Black and Latino adults.

Civil legal disputes can have such life-altering consequences as the loss of a driver’s license, having a bank account garnished, and being unable to secure a job.

In many cases, access to legal help can make a dramatic difference.

A neighbor works with Tzedek DC, a nonprofit whose work helps people grappling with some of the financial consequences of long-standing inequities.

Tzedek provides free legal services to DC residents who meet the Federal Poverty Guidelines and are facing legal problems arising from debt.
