Greetings to you ALL,

I cannot log in my gallery for a couple months.
My server couldn't help on it either since it has not been a WordPress program.

Previously, I couldn't update any new picture since January 2020, but the prior posted albums were live on the web through the two following gallery links:
www.lightmillennium.org/gallery/
www.lightmillennium.org/gallery1/

Now, both come up with the following message:

"This page isn’t working"

www.lightmillennium.org is currently unable to handle this request.

HTTP ERROR 500

Could you please kindly suggest how I can resolve and make the galleries up and running again?

And, is there any way without losing or having to re-upload the photos/albums and related visitor stats etc to upgrade the both to Gallery 3?

Your kind suggestion and/or reference will be greatly appreciated in this.

Thank you very much,

Best regards,

Bircan Ünver

Bircan,

For us to help, you need to provide more information:

What version of Gallery were you running when it was still working?

This will tell us if you can upgrade to the latest version of Gallery 3 without losing anything.

What version of PHP is your server running? Ask your server tech guy.

Were the two different websites identical? Or did they contain different images?

Greetings J.R.,

Thank you very much for your kind prompt reply.

Both Galleries working versions were 2. (I cannot remember if it was 2.+!)
Lightmillennium.org is an html based website. I produced it through Dreamweaver-3 or 4!

Under the same server, www.lmglobal.org, which is a WP Cascara theme (If I remember correctly), which uses php 7.
I've been facing issues with the gallery after we had to migrate the site in late May 2020.
Both galleries were live on the new server but couldn't upload any pictures since then.
When I did, all came up with a blank-portrait graphic, which I had to delete.

re Version:
According to the licence, in each gallery folder, it indicates the same below information:
GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE
      Version 2, June 1991

Copyright (C) 1989, 1991 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
51 Franklin St, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA  02110-1301  USA
Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed.

In response to the following:

Were the two different websites identical? Or did they contain different images?

Both were under the same website: lightmillennium.org
But each content is original.
re lightmillennium.org/gallery was the initial one, in which, at some point I couldn't update any image by then either.

At the time, with a different web hosting company in 2013, I was suggested to install another one and continue posting new photos in that one, which I did.
So that the full contents and albums and the years and stats are completely different in each.
So, the "lightmillennium.org/gallery1" was installed in 2013.
The other initial one <lightmillennium.org/gallery> might be installed in 2008 or 2009!

Most of the files are re .htaccess, index.php, licence, readme etc refers 2013, and  php.idi 2019.

I hope that the above provided info will be helpful to resolve this issue.

Many thanks for your kind attention and given time,

Best regards,

Bircan Ünver
www.lightmillennium.org

P.S: The other site under the same server lmglobal.org that uses WP theme but it doesn't have a gallery program besides, I had provided a link to the albums underneath of the homepage to lightmillennium.org!

From what you say, I'm afraid your existing Gallery 2 installation is not going to upgrade to Gallery 3. There are a few people who have managed to do it with a lot of frustrating crazy-tech effort, but their Gallery 2 websites were still up and running perfectly. Since your Gallery 2 sites are no longer up and running the upgrade is not possible.

You could try having your server set back to PHP 5.4 -- that was the latest version of PHP which Gallery 2 could run under -- but in your case I still don't think you could successfully upgrade to Gallery 3 because you report that you were unable to add new images to your Gallery 2 sites back in January, 2020. That indicates your database entries had become corrupt way back in 2020 -- so even if you set your server back to PHP 5.4 and you get the sites displaying again, the upgrade program to Gallery 3 must to be able to access a working Gallery 2 site which is running perfectly (and even then many times the upgrade does not work).

If you want to stick with Gallery, you could download the latest version from:

https://galleryrevival.com/

...it will run under PHP 7 and up (although it is not currently recommended for PHP 8). Once you have a new Gallery 3 website up and running, you could then upload your images to it and build up the website again. On the other hand, there are a lot of new "image gallery" type programs available now which you might like better. Many of these apps can be automatically installed from your servers software repository.

Thank you very much, J.R.

Is there any way to fix the both, or at least the second one that still it can be up and running  as version 2?  Even if I cannot upload a new photo or album.
re index.php and/or .htaccess, php.ini files?
In that case, I can install Gallery-3 and continue to post the new ones in it.
Otherwise, I  cannot effort to work backward near or over 60 photo albums.
More importantly, all the stats will be lost, and many of them are past event or conference related, and have introductory text in many of them!

re php 5.4 even if the gallery will work with it, then that will disable the lmglobal.org!

I don't know how to resolve this issue at this point.

Thanks again,

Best regards,
B.Ü.

Greetings again, J.R.,

Based on your questions, I've located the PHP's for each site under the same server.
My assumption was, one PHP set up for both domains on the server.

Anyhow, I've realized that while lmglobal.org is set up for 7.4, the server has increased lightmillennium.org to 8.0!
The lowest available PHP on the server is 7.3, which I've changed it to.

Now, both Galleries are coming up.
www.lightmillennium.org/gallery/
www.lightmillennium.org/gallery1

Since both are accessible and running at the moment, accordingly, how can I upgrade the both to version 3 without losing any information, stats etc?

Once again, thank you so much for your initial questions, which made me think them over that led me to locate the PHP version.

Best regards,
B.Ü.

Once you have Gallery 2 running again, you can install Gallery 3, log in
as administrator, go to Modules, enable Gallery 2 import, then go to
Settings and enter the path to embed.php that is in Gallery 2.

It all gets transferred over!

Thank you so much, Harold.

I did the first one but not the second one.

Re then go to Settings and enter the path to embed.php that is in Gallery 2 < do you refer to Gallery-2 folder in the file manager?
Or, where can I exactly locate the "embed.php" file, and which path info needs to be entered into and.or under which line?

Should the path info to be entered in the following page?
https://www.lightmillennium.org/gallery1/index.php/admin/advanced_settings

Many thanks,

Best regards,

Bircan

Since I don't have Gallery2 installed anymore, I can't say definitely. But
I think it is in the root directory of where the Gallery2 PHP code is
installed. If you are doing a multisite Gallery2, it will be in the site
specific Gallery2 PHP. If not there, you may have to look around a bit or
use grep to find it.

Good luck!

Harold

Thank you very much.

I searched it through public_html.
Later on, I've realized "server path" under setting/rundown menu where indicated: var/uploads

Now, my both Gallery dashboards are indicating the following:
  • Version: 3.0.9 (Chartres)
I suppose, both are updated!
Many thanks,

TLDR;

IIRC,  Gallery2 albums are stored in the 'data.gallery.base' directory. This location is defined in the config.php file located in the gallery2 installation folder, eg:
grep "data.gallery.base" /var/www/gallery2/config.php
$gallery->setConfig('data.gallery.base', '/var/www/gallery2/g2data');

Albums and the uploaded photos are contained in the g2data/albums directory and the photos should match the originally uploaded names.

Never used multi-site gallery2 so NFI there.

Harold,

Last I heard, the Gallery 2 import module only worked if your Gallery 2 installation was version 2.3 and even then that the comments and most of text data did doing import over into Gallery 3. Was your experience different?

Bircan,

It seems like all of the valuable information that others contributed about Gallery 2 over the last few days helped you solve what at first seemed to me to be unsolvable. Looking at the now-working links to your websites I see that you have managed to untangle the PHP mess and got your Gallery 2 installations working well enough to successfully do the migration to Gallery 3. Great!

Even though the screen is saying you are running "version 3.0.9 (Chartres)" that is just an artifact in the code left over from the original development team, because 3.0.9 Chartres does not run under  PHP 7  -- and since you are now running PHP 7.3 you must be running version 3.1.1 or higher of Gallery 3. You should stick with PHP 7.3 for now, until Brad gives us the all clear for running Gallery 3 under PHP 8.

I don't know what version of Gallery 2 I was running. I suspect I kept it
pretty much up to date. The import to Gallery 3 did bring all comments and
text (descriptions, etc.). See, for example,

Harold,

Thanks so much: Finally, after 4 years we get demonstrated clarification -- clearing up all kinds of previous info about moving an old Gallery 2 installation into Gallery 3 :

So, if you  have password access to  a properly working version 2.3.1 of Gallery 2 when you use the Gallery 3 Import Modules to migrate it into a new, current Gallery 3 installation you actually will get all comments, descriptions and other text data imported into the new G3 installation.

This seems to indicate that there were some pretty serious improvements to the final version Gallery 2.3.1 over the previous versions  -- so it's mandatory for anyone trying to import a G2 site into G3 that they first upgrade to version 2.3.1 of Gallery 2 *before* trying to do the import into G3.

It also important to realize that the *entire* process must be done on a server running PHP 5.4 or 5.6 (nothing higher or lower -- since the G3 Import Module must be able to access the working G2 installation during the import process. After the import, the new G3 site should be examined carefully and if everything looks good, only then set the server to PHP 7 and check it again.

Gallery 2 downloads have been disabled on the Gallery Project site, but they can still be found at Source Forge:

If you need to upgrade an old G2 site before trying to do the import to G3, I would suggest getting and using these files and starting the update process with the "preinstaller" (although I'm not sure exactly what the "preinstaller" does, probably simply locate the current G2 installation to make sure it is working):

preinstaller-2.3.1.zip 2009-12-17 24.2 kB
gallery-2.3.1-full.zip 2009-12-16 21.9 MB
gallery-2.3.1-full.tar.gz 2009-12-16 14.6 MB

This sums up is the full extent of my personal knowledge of Gallery 2 (which I have never used, starting with version 3.0.9 myself)
