It looks like he changed the physical location of where he put the Gallery files when he "upgraded". This is a no-no because, yes, you will break the URLs because the pictures and everything else is now located in a different location than it was before. As far as I can tell the old URL stated the location was:
http://www.ngwclub.com/albums/
... etc.
and the new URL states the location as:
https://ngwclub.com/gallery3/var ... etc
by the way, /var/ should *never* appear in the URL. He did things very incorrectly when he upgraded.
I urge people to read and fully understand the instructions at:
http://codex.galleryproject.org/Gallery3:User_guide:Gallery3:Installing_and_upgrading.html#Upgrading
I am working on rewriting these instructions to be a bit more clear and specific as it is obvious some people are having a hard time following them. I hope to have that done in a few days.

Steve,
Oh dear... it sounds like your group's old Gallery installation was taken on its own very unique evolutionary path. I've never heard of keeping the G1 or G2 directories once a successful upgrade to Gallery 3 was made. Unless it was just for an emergency backup in case G3 went badly wrong. In a normal installation G1 and/or G2 can be completely deleted after a successful move to G3. They certainly were never "necessary for the system to work" unless for some reason your tech guy hacked G3 to use them (which is one bizarre concept, but I suppose it could be done if one wanted to for some reason).
It does explain how you ended
up with such a bizarre and long URL to access the images in
your G3 installation. I congratulate you on being able to get
things mostly-working on Gallery 3.1.3 in spite of having to
upgrade such a non-standard G2 installation. This allows your
group to continue to use of Gallery to continue in the modern
era of PHP 7+ and without any dangerous dependencies on the
now discontinued Flash routines.

Beo,
Thanks for this tip. I have never implemented the embeditem module but from the sound of it I wish I had many years ago. At the very least it results in shorter URLs for the images, but I do have some questions about it:
1) Does it affect anything when running maintenance tasks, particularly "fix your Gallery"?
2) If I implement the module,
will it work retroactively on all 50,000 of my existing images
or just on new uploads?
3) What about all the people who have bookmarked images over the years which referenced the full image path? Will those bookmarks still work for them? Currently my Gallery displays this path to an image's location:
https://www.boxartden.com/gallery/index.php/Boxart-Collection/ADAMS/Adams-Atomic-Cannon-1
