Tuesday, I embarked on the Loveland CCC B plus group ride with 90% downtube battery charge and with no range extender.
Fred's B plus group was riding exceptionally strong (for this early in the season) as we faced strong head and cross winds for nearly the entire ride.
On several occasions we caught up with Nick's A group at various intersections. At approx 20 miles into the ride, 2 of us out of the B plus group bridged up to the A Group who then proceeded to put their foot on the gas. Suffice to say it was one hell of an effort to stay on the wheel of the A group for the remainder of the ride. At the conclusion of the ride my Trek Domane + had only 9% battery left after approx 32 hard ridden miles.
With the above consumption ratio I estimate that with a 100% downtube battery charge and riding with a group at race speed and with strong headwinds, the Trek Domane + would last approx 40 miles. With the addition of the Range Extender I project the bike would go approx 55 miles under these conditions.
As for future attempts to hang with the A group, the limitations of the Trek Domane + are clearly apparent. With a 28 mph (un-hackable) governor and a total weight of 27.5 lbs (including range extender) hanging with the A group for long durations would be a bridge too far.
Retro out.
