Carl, this is a great article. Thanks for finding it. Once we know the pattern to look for, we'll probably see it in all sorts of complex adaptive systems. It strikes me that many diseases can be described in these terms. Perhaps also phenomena in markets, culture, politics/bureaucracy, minds, scientific inquiry, etc. This seems very general.

Once upon a time, this would have been a "cybernetics paper".
