Hello All,

Foss Nepal wiki is up and running again at http://wiki.fossnepal.org/ is up and running. Moving forward, I will maintain it.

Please browse it, check it and share your feedback about it. I will create a github repo for the website and also write a Readme on how to set it up. It's a media wiki installation so that should help a bit. It can be little tricky during debug and development. I will try to add docs on those areas.

In order to get it up and running, I had to disable the following MediaWiki extensions.

1. ConfirmAccount

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ConfirmAccount

The ConfirmAccount extension disables direct account creation and requires the approval of new accounts by a bureaucrat. Direct account creation can still be enabled (if you want Administrators/Bureaucrats to be able to directly make them) by configuring User rights.

2. ConfirmEdit

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ConfirmEdit

The ConfirmEdit extension lets you use various different CAPTCHA techniques, to try to prevent spambots and other automated tools from editing your wiki, as well as to foil automated login attempts that try to guess passwords.

Known issues

- anyone can signup without formal approval

- higher chances of getting spam/bots

If I could have a quick discussion with a former maintainer then it will ease the further development. Is there any possibility on how I can reach the person.

Thank you for running foss. But founder members are deleted in new amendment . It says lkhat...@gmail.com user is not exstt. It says you can create a user account. remember that I exchanged more than 1000 mail from and to foss nepal. Ok do your best.

Thank you Avash for bringing it up.

This is quite unfortunate.

Lately, I have received high disk usage on the account and was wondering why all of sudden such spike in high usage. I will look into it during this week, maybe during weekends.

We don't have to worry about the data. I have backup of old database. Currently we don't have any new updates so I didn't bother to spend more time on it. I have plans to upgrade wiki to a recent version. It's a long way. Once upgraded to the recent version, I will then move to securing it. If anyone is up for it, Lets collaborate.

Hello All,

The server itself has not been hacked. This is mere content update only.

My guess is someone registered the account and edited the contents. This is possible because the extensions that required users approval after creations were disabled. I did that on purpose.

I will restore db during weekends. Until then I will put up a maintenance banner.

I have restored the DB and also have managed to upgrade the version to from 1.21.x to 1.23.0.

The changes that I have made so far on the wiki:

• Upgrade from 1.21.x to 1.23.0 (Major and LTS at least was LTS in past 😂)
  
• Disabled the API
  
• Disabled the user registration (found 5xxx number of users created, possibly scripted registration process).
  
• Previously registered users will still be able to login. Logged in users will have permission to edit pages.
