Dear all,

I am very pleased to share my new paper with you, Food for Thought: An Assessment of Australian Law and Regulation for Combating Food Waste

As part of my PhD, I conducted the first comprehensive analysis of Australia's food waste law and regulation. My research shows how the significant number of policies regarding food waste combined with the lack of laws that directly address food waste illustrates a disconnect between policy rhetoric and governmental action. Current responses to food waste are characterised by inconsistency (eg definitions etc), a lack of a focus on preventing waste (more about managing waste) and a strong emphasis on voluntary-based initiatives. Legislative responses fail to consider indirect causes (eg supermarkets) or do not address food waste at all (eg food rescue). This article shows why the current focus limits the ability of the regime to respond to Australia's food waste problem.
