Following the success of the 2023 Future of Food Symposium event, it is our great pleasure to invite you to an online follow up event that will be held from 1 to 4pm (BST) on the afternoon of the 1st of November 2023.The purpose of the event is to continue discussions from researchers and practitioners working in the area of food insecurity and sustainability.

This event will focus on two topics: Rights based approaches to Food Inequalities; and the Challenges and Opportunities within Charitable Food Supply Chains.

1) Rights based approaches to Food Inequalities

The Covid-19 pandemic and current cost of living crisis has highlighted entrenched inequalities in food and nutrition security. It has exposed socio-economic barriers to healthy and sustainable food for those most vulnerable. Charitable food aid has primarily been the means to address these inequalities. However, it does not follow from this that the right to adequate food and nutrition is realised.

We will have a panel discussion on questions such as:

  • What do rights-based approaches to food insecurity/food poverty look like?
  • How are they different from charity-based approaches?
  • What forms do they take?
  • What is the role of the Government?
  • What can the community sector do?
  • Where are we in terms of ‘right to food’ in the UK context?

We will hear from researchers and practitioners working to promote more equitable, rights-based approaches at local, regional and national levels.

2) The challenges and opportunities of charitable food supply chains

This session focuses on the important work within charitable food supply chains that provide a lifeline of accessible food provision to community organisations.

The findings from a study that explored this sector's need for greater resilience will be presented.

  • Dr. Jordon Lazell and Dr. Debashree De (Essex Business School, University of Essex) share their work ‘A more resilient food future? The challenges and opportunities of charitable food supply chains’

We invite practitioners, policy makers, community leaders, organisations and funders tackling food poverty, as well as researchers working in this field to join us at this follow up online event.

We will also be announcing the details of 2024 Future of Food Symposium.

Hello Jordon and colleagues

This is a very exciting symposium. Interestingly I conducted a study with farmers in my region of southwest British Columbia and the idea of tying a right to food approach to address the issue of food loss (at a systems level) was brought up. I think this is relevant to UBI. We found external pressures around price, the experience of having their produce being rejected, and the consolidation of retail ( we have 5 in Canada) contributing to farmers having very little choice but often to just let food rot in the field. When farmers do not feel the pressure and have some of their risks alleviated it can provide alternatives to farmers to not just focus on one commodity etc.

Here is our study:

Tilling food under: Barriers and opportunities to address the loss of edible food at the farm-level in British Columbia, Canada

If anybody in this list needs access to the paper please let me know

Thank you
