Hi All,
I wanted to use the latest version of Flying Saucer (9.9.0). However the legal reviewer of this jar in my company asked me the following :
"Can
you please confirm the following: is there an alternative to flying saucer that
can be used which would avoid the use of iTextPDF (or – if not - is there a
way to avoid such use of iTextPDF within flying saucer)?
For background, iTextPDF is troublesome: it is dual-licensed by Apryse (the
other license is a paid commercial license) and Apryse has been actively
contacting commercial software companies that use iTextPDF in its products but
have not purchased a commercial license to accuse them of breach (by failing to
comply with its requirement to distribute the source code to the application
using AGPL-licensed code). Apryse then requires the companies to purchase a
commercial license (and to true-up for its prior use), while asserting that
even fully internal background processing of PDF files cannot be separated from
a hosted application that provides these files to customers.
In short, we should anticipate the potential for significant licensing disputes
with Apryse if we deploy iTextPDF within flying saucer without a commercial
license."
Can you please help me out.
