Did you try any of the steps in the answer to this stack overflow question?

That fixes the issue to generate a configure script. However, why not address the bigger problem and fix it permanently?

btw: fltk still fails to compile because it thinks it is a non-mingw system

Have you tried the cmake version instead of autogen?

Huh! I've never seen that... Do you know what version of the autotools is bundled with your mingw/Msys2 setup?

This is an "it has always worked for me" sort of answer, but I think I have a pretty old version of the autotools in my tarball that I use for setting up new machines, so it may be immune.

FWIW, and this might be worth a shot too, I don't do the "NOCONFIGURE=1 ./autogen.sh" approach at all generally - rather, I just type "make" in the top of the clean checkout. The fltk Makefile then detects that autoconf et al have not run, sets up the defaults and the missing config bits, and runs the configure (with default values) and builds OK.
If I want non-default configure options, I break in at this point and re-run "./configure" manually with the needed settings...

So far, this Just Works... Here's a grab of what that looks like, from a clean sheet...

Your home directory ('/home/Mark J Olesen') contains spaces which could
not be handled by the script.

I fixed the script and the README files, this should no longer be the case.

Note: There's no guarantee though that the build works if the FLTK tree
is in a directory whose path contains one or more spaces.

Anyway: see new instructions in README.Windows.txt (git commit
ef1c2d5b2686):

If you got FLTK via git then you need one extra step. Otherwise skip
over this part. Stay in your FLTK source-code directory and type the
following:

  autoconf

Now configure your FLTK installation:

  ./configure

Hint: Instead of executing `autoconf` and `configure` followed by `make`
to build FLTK (see next section) you can also run `make` directly which
will create and execute the 'configure' script with default parameters
and build FLTK with the default configuration.

(End of citation)

I hope this is helpful and simplifies the configuration task.

I also hope that I can find the time to update all build instructions
which are partly outdated (as seen above) before we release 1.4.0.

This *may* be caused by using the "wrong" make program. MSYS(2) has
several different `make` tools which you need to install "correctly" for
whatever you want to achieve. Can you please try to run

$ mingw32-make

instead of `make`. Does this make a difference? Does it work?

PS: please don't top-post in this group. Thanks.

Thanks for working on the issue. The autotools scripts now work fine.
Are we missing some Windows flag to the compiler? It does not appear to be defining a Windows macro. So, platform.H thinks it is unix.

    In my case:

        1) I followed steps 1 through 7 on this page: https://www.msys2.org/

        2) Not sure why, but 'git' was not part of the 'base-devel' install in step 7 above,
           so I had to install it with: pacman -S git

CAVEAT
    To install a new msys2 in place of my older out of date one, I simply renamed away my old
    msys2 install using the following in a DOS window (and making sure no msys shells were open):

            move c:\msys64 c:\.deleteme-msys64

    ..then installed from scratch using the above instructions.

Hmm - what compiler actually is that? There are a few things you get that I don’t seem to see, and some things look “wrong”...

What does “g++ -v” actually report in your Msys2 shell?

Cross-compiling: no
       Graphics: GDI+

OK - so at this point configure has correctly identified that it is a Windows GDI build (i.e. not X11!)

Compiling gzlib.c...
gzlib.c: In function ‘gz_open’:
gzlib.c:243:20: warning: implicit declaration of function ‘_wopen’; did you mean ‘fwopen’? [-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
  243 |         fd == -2 ? _wopen(path, oflag, 0666) :
      |                    ^~~~~~
      |                    fwopen

That looks odd - I don't recall my “fresh” build from earlier today doing that.
This may well be the warning from PNG that Greg mentions, though I imagine.

Compiling Fl.cxx...
In file included from Fl.cxx:22:
../FL/platform.H:51:14: fatal error: X11/Xlib.h: No such file or directory
   51 | #    include <X11/Xlib.h>
      |              ^~~~~~~~~~~~
compilation terminated.

And my build definitely did not do that!

Thanks for working on the issue. The autotools scripts now work fine.

The compiler set of defines you listed looks a bit odd to me; in particular a “Windows” compiler ought to define (at least) “_WIN32", maybe also “__WIN32” (and historically also WIN32, but that is deprecated now) but yours appears not to have defined any of those, though it does have __MSYS__ and so forth set. Which seems suspicious.
Which, in turn, was why I was asking what actual compiler you are using...

Yes I think that's the case. The "problem" with MSYS2 is that there are several "personalities" of the build tools, one for MSYS itself (you MUST NOT use that one) and one for Windows (MinGW) 32-bit and 64-bit. You can use one of the latter, I'm using the 64-bit versions.

    In my case:

        1) I followed steps 1 through 7 on this page: https://www.msys2.org/

        2) Not sure why, but 'git' was not part of the 'base-devel' install in step 7 above,

fltk-1.4.x.git
                make

    This automatically ran autogen, ran configured, and then started building FLTK.

I think step 7 is the key:

$ pacman -S --needed base-devel mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain

This does obviously install the correct toolchain (mingw-w64-x86_64). Unfortunately I don't have a log of my installation available.

@Mark: you wrote:

Exactly. Your gcc output does not contain the required _WIN32 macro because this gcc "personality" is obviously for building MSYS programs. For comparison, this is from my MSYS2 installation:

$ pacman -Qs | grep gcc   # lists the installed gcc compiler
local/gcc-libs 10.2.0-1 (msys2-devel)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc-ada 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc-fortran 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc-libgfortran 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc-libs 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-gcc-objc 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
local/mingw-w64-x86_64-libgccjit 10.3.0-5 (mingw-w64-x86_64-toolchain)
    GNU Compiler Collection (libgccjit) for MinGW-w64

$ which g++
/mingw64/bin/g++

$ g++ -dM -E -x c++ - < /dev/null | grep WIN32
#define __WIN32__ 1
#define _WIN32 1
#define WIN32 1
#define __WIN32 1

This shows that the required _WIN32 macro is defined here.

Mark, please try to follow the instructions Greg showed above and I believe you should get the correct toolchain installed and your Msys2/MinGW installation should be able to build FLTK for a standard Windows environment.

    I'll await the OP's response to that question as well.

    What it "should be", assuming msys2 was installed recently (today),
    I get version 11.2.0 (Rev2):

      |                    fwopen

That looks odd - I don't recall my “fresh” build from earlier today doing that.
This may well be the warning from PNG that Greg mentions, though I imagine.

    Actually, that's not one of the warnings I got.

    I opened issue #296 regarding the warnings I got this morning:

Interesting. I deleted msys and did another install following the steps outlined by Greg. The library was build and some exes. Now getting stuck on
