I'm probably the best one to answer this, as I manage the FLTK google groups
and the interfaces to the seriss.com usenet server and web forum interface.
I use thunderbird too, receiving the google group via the mailing list
which I have filtered to a separate folder.
I do remember having to play around with Thunderbird's config to disable
the confusing "Reply" button that would sometimes reply to the group and
sometimes reply via private email.
I found I could disable that confusing button, so that the only one I see
is the "Reply List" button at the top/right of messages, and I've been using
that for a while now and not had trouble since.
So for instance when I'm replying to your message, I use the "Reply List"
(red arrow in this screenshot), which always replies to the list:
I can try to find the Thunderbird config info I used, as I believe I was working on this

Albrecht: Sorry if it's too long and/or some lines wrap. You appear to be using thunderbird, to avoid word wrap on outbound messages, try setting: Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Config Editor ..search for "wrap", and change: mailnews.wraplength to 999 I'm not sure if other options need to be set, but I set this up many many years ago -- it ensures when I paste code, it doesn't get wrapped on send.
FWIW, mine's 68.3.0Albrecht: I have "Thunderbird 68.2.2 (64-bit)"
and this has two buttons when reading the mailing list: 1) Reply 2) Reply List (with a dropdown arrow like Fl_Choice)
Yes, me as well.. the button arrangement looks like this:
Right -- I always seem to use the toolbar button. If you don't have this version, you (certainly know that you) can right-click on the message and select "Reply to List").
Yes, that works for me too..I just found out that you can right-click in the mail's toolbar (where the "Reply" button is located) and then click "Customize".
I don't seem to have a "Smart Reply" option under customize.. perhaps they removed it:The "Reply List" button is then called "Smart Reply". Maybe you can drag this button to the toolbar? I just dragged it out and in again, works for me.
Hmm, really? You wrote that you have 68.3 which seems to be the higher version.Ya, what I have is 68.0.3, which is lower. If upgrading doesn't work I should backgrade. I don't think I upgraded it on purpose; I had to update the OS, and it dragged a tbird update with it I think.
I may have found a workable solution. Apparently in the "message header bar" which is above the first line of text when reading a message, that also has buttons for "Reply" and "Forward". I found if I visit my FLTK mailing list folder, open the Customize dialog for /that/, and drag 'Reply' out of that bar and into the "customize" dialog to make it disappear, then "Reply List" is the only choice. And if I go back to regular email, plain old "Reply" is the only choice in that bar. I know I tried this trick already with the main toolbar (below the File/Edit menu) back when the upgrade happened, but removing "Reply", it stays gone no matter which folder you're reading, which is bad. I just need it gone when reading the mailing lists. So now I can just remove "Reply" and "Reply All" from the main toolbar completely so I don't make the mistake of using it, and just depend on the buttons in the header bar.
1) Reply 2) Reply List (with a dropdown arrow like Fl_Choice)

Oh, and I meant to write: I seem to be entirely hardwired to hit "Reply" no matter what.
Decades of conditioning I guess, as I've been using this since the early 2000's,
back when mail was part of the browser (so when the browser crashed, which was often,
your email compostions died with it, lol)
I'll look again for an extension. Or maybe I can upgrade to 68.2.2 like you have.
