Hi all,

I'm having troubles with GitHub comments on commits. Sometimes I get notifications about new comments on a particular commit, but when I follow the link I don't see any comments, although there is an icon that shows a number of comments.

Is this only me, or is this a general GitHub problem?

For instance, take a look at this link:

https://github.com/fltk/fltk/commit/28e541513f3d51900ca1e7317a10a752dabcb5be#r198351290

What I see if I scroll down looks like this:

History:
  1. Manolo added two comments
  2. I didn't see the comments in my usual browser Firefox (ESR) on Debian Bookworm
  3. I used another browser (either Brave or Chromium) which displayed Manolo's comments
  4. I added two comments (now 4 comments)
  5. I could no longer see any comments
  6. Manolo replied with two more comments (now 6).
  7. I still can't see any comments, neither with Firefox, Chromium, nor on macOS with Safari (and Firefox).

So, current status for me is that I can't reply to Manolo's comments (I found them in our newsgroup "fltk.issues" so I could read them at least).

Note to Manolo: I committed your suggestions and added ", resp.", see commit 33c466517ad67f747af6fea02abce9280d56631c.

Questions to all (not only FLTK devs):

  1. What do you see when using the link shown above?
  2. Did you have similar experiences?
  3. Do you have evidence if this is a known (GitHub) issue?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Albrecht,

Mainly I seem to see what you see. i.e. it says there are 6 comments but shows 0.

However, if I select "Expand all lines" then scroll down (the now much longer) file I do see all the comments.

This was with Edge and Chrome (on Win11) and I was logged into GH at the time.

Meanwhile I tried several hints (including "full refresh with ctrl/shift/r" and using a private browser window) but such this didn't help. Logging in as suggested (when I was not logged in) didn't help either

However, switching from my preferred view mode "unified diff" to "split diff" immediately displayed the comments. Switching back to "unified diff" kept the comments visible. This is obviously not a "user state" issue. I had to do this in all open browser sessions with different browsers, and this always worked. That's weird.

BTW: Thanks to Ian for your comment. I'll try that as well when I encounter this issue for the next time.

PS: Even if the comments are displayed inline, the line at the bottom right part still says "Comments 0", hence this seems to have another meaning.

OK, "Expand all lines", as Ian suggested, works as well.

But it's even weirder:
  1. as written above, switching from unified to split diff displays comments
  2. switching back to unified diff keeps comments visible
  3. Doing a full refresh (ctrl/shift/r) in "unified diff" view does no longer display comments.
I's say, this must be a GitHub issue.

Anyway, I'm done with this for now, since I know how to display (and reply to) comments.

However, any further insights would be appreciated nevertheless...

I'm also having a hard time with commit comments. They used to work straightforwardly, but not anymore. Comments disappear once they've been published. Thanksfully, this thread teaches me that using "Expand all lines" is the thing to do.

I've seen the same for many weeks.
Used to work, now it doesn't. Or at least partially doesn't.

I searched around on google a month or two ago because my comment
wasn't showing up, "0 comments", and it recommended something or other
that if you walked over to the code a certain way you could see the comment again.
I just assumed they broke something, and eventually it'll be fixed.

You can report bugs to github; there's a place to do it, I forget where exactly,
but I ran into it while researching what to do about floods of trivial AI commits
and the github devs were discussing it and within a few months added those new
throttling features..
