Hi all,

It is my pleasure to announce that Language Forge is again under active development and the team has recently released some fixes and improvements.  In case you are unfamiliar, Language Forge is an online collaborative dictionary editor that syncs with FLEx and is occasionally mentioned on this list.  While this is a modest release, it includes developer improvements that make it easier for us to release improvements in the future.  Thank you for your patience and feedback.  The next few months will prioritize fixing bugs in existing Language Forge features.  If you use Language Forge and would like to file a bug report or give us feedback, you can do that in one of several ways:

1)      Leave us a note on our community site

2)      Email us at languagef...@sil.org

3)      Create an issue in our public issue tracker on GitHub

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the info.

Is there a plan to make Scripture Forge able to be used off-line?
If there is such a plan, what is the time table?

Yours,
Kari

Hi Kari,

I assume that you are referring to offline use of Language Forge.  At this time we are still working in the early stages of developing our roadmap, and my guess is that other features such as crowd-sourcing, social media integration, lexical relations, etc. will rank higher than offline.  You'll want to pay attention

Scripture Forge, a different product, has been rewritten from the ground up to be an offline-capable web app.  You can check that out over at https://scriptureforge.org

Sincerely,

Chris

I accidentally posted my reply before I was finished.  Kari, you'll want to watch the Language Forge community site for future communication around our roadmap and priorities going forward.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your response.
Yes, I wanted to talk about Language Forge, not Scripture Forge.

In Indonesia, where we work, internet is unreliable, so we cannot use software that cannot be used off-line. I really would like to be able to use Language Forge and it is a disappointment that we cannot use it.

I would assume that more people all over the world would be able to use Language Forge, if it had off-line capability. It would be nice if you could re-evaluate the prioritisation of features.

Do you know how many people are using Language Forge and how many are using Flex?

Yours,
Kari

Hi Kari,

I appreciate your feedback and as I said our development roadmap and priorities are still being formed.  Thank you for communicating that you still require applications to operate offline in your context - this is helpful to know.  I do not know exactly how many people are using FLEx vs Language Forge.  I would guess that many FLEx users have given Language Forge a try but did not continue using it because it lacked the feature they were looking for e.g. offline or FLEx S/R didn't work for their project.

If you would like to continue conversation about Language Forge I suggest we continue our dialog over on the Language Forge community site.

Thanks,

Chris

I have not paid attention to Language Forge until today, to back up FLEx. I have gotten an error message … can’t do it for some reason … but now that I read this thread, I realize that I would not use it if indeed one cannot use FLEx off-line. I always have to work off-line in the location where I work in Mexico. Or am I missing something?

Dear Steve,

Thank you for your message.  You are correct.  Language Forge is an online-only web app at this point.  I understand the use-case for offline editing on your lexicon, and so FLEx and WeSay are the best tools we have.  I have recently produced some Language Forge release highlight videos in case you would like to know what we've been up to lately.

Warm regards,

Hi Chris,

Is there a plan or time table when Language Forge will get off-line capabilities?

Hi Kari,

Thanks for reaching out.  The current version 1 of Language Forge will not get offline capabilities, however Language Forge will at some point be rewritten and offline capabilities would be considered part of the core design.  This is the plan, however there is no time estimate.

Warm regards,

Hi there Chris,
I am just now discovering the Language Forge world and would like to add my voice to those who need an offline version.  Our situation in western Africa is such that teams only get to reliable online access occasionally.  Looking forward to the day that this becomes a feature - it will really help out many of our field teams.  Thanks for your good work and blessings on the LF development team!

Thank you for taking the time to add your voice regarding an offline version of Language Forge.  We will certainly strongly consider this as a requirement when we are building the next generation LF application.  Thank you also for the encouragement!  95% of communication with software developers revolves around bugs and what's not working, which over time can be discouraging - it's always nice to receive affirmation that what we are making (and planning to make) is heading in the right direction and helping people.

Blessings,

Chris
