I typically write down, on paper, how many entries I have under each letter every time I create another 50 entries. I missed the last update, so I've entered 100, since my last update. Practically every letter had at least one new entry in this last 100, but the F-words dropped from 162 to 23!

What happened to my words missing 139 words? Can I restore this section from a backup file without erasing everything I entered since the LAST backup?

I recently lost information from 18 entries. The entries were still there, but the information (definitions, example sentences) that I had entered since the last Send/Receive was gone. I figured it would be easier to just redo the work rather than go to the trouble of restoring older versions of the database and trying to merge entries.

I don't know what I did to cause the problem. There might be a bug in the Send/Receive process, or I may have done something stupid.

Does anyone have any suggestions about recovering my data?

There is no telling what happened to your data without looking at your project.  If you want us to look at it, please send a current backup of the project to flex_...@sil.org.  Also, please tell us some of the words that are ‘missing’.

Do you have a filter turned on? This has put me in a panic a couple times over the years😁

This has been solved. Apparently Flex was in some funny state where it didn’t list all of the entries. When Adam set a filter and then cleared the filter, everything was there.

After hours of research, I've determined that the loss Ron experienced was from a user error of some kind--most likely copying a fwdata file from one machine to another.

If anyone uses two machines, and is using Send/Receive, they should never copy Flex files from one machine to the other. It is possible to do this if you do things exactly right, but it’s very easy to do something that could lose a lot of data. Instead, on each machine they need to do Get Project from Colleague to get started, and then to transfer any data between the machines, they should do S/R on the one machine, and then do S/R on the other machine to get the changes. During S/R each project folder needs to have the fwdata file matched with the mercurial repo in the .hg directory. Copying fwdata files between two machines, or on one machine by restoring a FieldWorks backup to another directory and then copying it into the S/R directory will almost certainly result in significant loss of data. It's fine to make FieldWorks backups as another means for protecting your data, but these backups do not include the .hg mercurial directory. Flex will not allow you to restore a FieldWorks backup to a project that is using S/R because of the likelihood of losing data.
