Hi all,

When I'm glossing or analysing a single-word entry in Texts&Words, I can Create New Entry, which goes into the Lexicon. But the associated information in the fields beneath the Word in Texts&Words, like the free/literal translations and various notes, don't carry over. So, when I go into Lexicon, I can't see that information about that particular lexeme.

Is there a way around this? Or do I have to manually copy over the information?

thanks, Ellen

Hi Ellen,
In principle, the information that you have for a word in a text, and what you have in the notes below the text line, refer to different levels of the linguistic hierarchy. The notes and the various translation lines are given for the whole line of text, so that it doesn't make sense to make this information available in the lexicon with each morpheme - which would also potentially appear in many other text lines, where different translations and different notes apply. So this inability is be design.
In your case, you use these notes and translation lines with a different purpose in order to show other orthographic representations of the same morpheme. This is why I earlier suggested to you that you create different writing systems for each different orthographic representation - this is the cleanest way to show this information without breaking the integrity of the linguistic hierarchy.

But even if you do that, when using "Create New Entry" the current dialogue does not allow you to enter the morpheme form in another writing system - you will still have to go to the lexicon to add this information by hand, but at least there will be a good place for it. I believe the developers plan to make things a little easier by allowing to create a new entry into a pop-up window of the Lexicon, where more fields are immediately available, and where you don't have to leave the Text-and-Words window you work in.

Best wishes,
Andreas

Yes, the ability to add other details to the lexical entry is indeed coming soon. I believe this is a feature that will be greatly appreciated by FLEx users working in the Texts & Words area.

Hi Andreas, thanks for your help, that makes sense. I see that I could manually copy an alternative spelling to the Lexeme box under a different writing system, and potentially alternative glosses to the Gloss box under a different writing system, but it wouldn't make sense to copy e.g. reference info to these boxes. A pop-up window would be most helpful, rather than going in and out of T&W.
Some of my texts contain wordlists as well as sentences. I'm wondering whether to import these texts in two halves - import the wordlist parts to Lexicon, and import the sentences to Texts&Words. The problem is that the Lexicon would then end up having many duplicate words. Is there a way to combine all the info in one lexical entry, with all the info in another lexical entry? Or would I just have to work out which entry I want to keep and delete the others?
thanks again, Ellen

The pop-up box to add (and possibly edit) entries in the lexicon without leaving your text is a feature that is coming soon. I can't remember where it is in the development cycle, but I've received notifications that it's being worked on, so there is hope for you on the horizon.

I'm in 9.3.6 Beta and it has the popup to edit the word while still in T&W. However pasting into fields in the popup doesn't work (I've reported this). So it's still got some kinks to work out. But nice to see it on the way.

Hi Ellen,
Now I better understand what you are trying.
There is a way to merge entries, keeping all the information in place (with both former entries then represented as senses of the same entry). It is a bit hidden:
When you are in one of the two entries, click on "Tools - Merge with entry". This will get you into a small dialogue where you can pick the entry that you want to merge with. There may be more adjustments of the entry you have to do, such as make sure that they have the correct grammatical settings and so on.
