As discussed here https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/firebase-talk/Co3QtNkMeZI, is there any plan to add the ability to select region for your Firestore? This would be paramount in order to use it for personal data within the EU.

+10000000 for this

The firestore looks amazing, great work.

As i have been told by my clients that despite the EU model contract clause they will flat out not use our application with the personal data stored in anyway in the states after GDPR, it would be spectacular if you could choose your data location / region etc as per datastore in google cloud.

I have my fingers very crossed for the firebase summit.

Even if its not ready, a commitment that it will be possible before GDPR will have the europeans utterly delighted!!

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback! We hear you loud and clear.  While currently only available in our US multi-region location, Cloud Firestore will be available in multiple GCP locations in the future. Unfortunately we don't have a specific date to announce yet.

Thanks,
-Michael

Hello Michael,

Do you have more info on when Cloud Firestore would be available in a GCP location in Europe? I know that GCP & Firebase usually don't communicate any date for the availability of new products/services but I "try my luck", as this is really a crucial point for us in Europe to be able to convince clients to use Firebase for their projects.

Thanks in advance
Regards
Renaud

Renaud, still no dates we can share unfortunately. Note that the new GDPR and privacy laws specifically address this point and data isn't required to be located in EU. I understand, of course, that some clients are still not warming to this idea.

Thanks Kato for your prompt reply. I know that GDPR adresses the point but for many clients it is actually not sufficient to convince them, unfortunately... On this matter I've experimented that it is a lot a question of perception (i.e. subjectivity and not objectivity).

So I think we are a lot here in UE who will be really happy when Firestore will be available in EU locations, which will mean more projects in Firebase! And more pleasure to work with this really excellent platform! :-)

Thanks
Renaud

Kato, you probably would be surprised how things like CLOUD act are discussed and (sometimes also mis)represented in Europe especially in face of GDPR (which also is not really understood by many).

Thanks for the feedback all. Noting this for our roadmap discussions.

We have a lot of the same battles here. "On premise installs are more secure" is a frequent point I hear. One way we've been able to work on this in the U.S. is to ask businesses if their on-prem solution can meet all of the compliances of a Cloud org like like GCP. It's often an eye-opening experience for them to consider the work it would entail to match those. I hope the shift to cloud will pick up steam in the coming years around the globe.

In the mean time, more work to do on regions for us : )
