Has anyone successfully deployed a firebase app to users in China? I am experiencing extreme latency lags (on the order of 12 seconds for full page load) when the app is accessed from Beijing/Shanghai, and was wondering if this is a great firewall issue, and if others have overcome this issue if it exists.

Thanks,
Josh

Did you ever get an answer to this? I'm considering firebase for something but wanted to know if it will be blocked in China first...

Hey David,

Are you referring to an app on Firebase Hosting or an app that uses the Firebase client? I'm not aware of any blocking of either in China, but that is mainly based on a lack of hearing of any issues, not because I have any hard evidence.

Hey all,

We now have an official response for this issue:

Please refer to the Google International Transparency Report to find out the latest information on service disruptions in your country, regarding all Google products, including Firebase.

Hope that helps,
Jacob

I can't find any mention there of firebase so I guess for now it's ok?

Going to give this topic a bump; @Jacob - There's no mention of Firebase, nor China, in the link specific. Could we please have a more official, specific, response to this question? I would hate to invest my time assuming Firebase will work and then just have to rewrite my application after finding out it does not.

Gents, Jacob's answer is authoritative:

for example this list doesn't mention google maps disruptions in 2015 but I can say 100% that gmaps doesn't work there.

oddly, it does mention maps in 2014.

so, not a very reliable report for basing decisions on.

can you categorically say that Firebase is 100% accessible?

This list is not comprehensive. Learn more.

there are a list of services that are blocked. implication is that there maybe others, including Firebase.

in any case, given that all traffic goes through the GFW, = high latency, the performance is probably very degraded.

Agreed - The lists linked to are not comprehensive in the slightest. We need a true, definitive, and authoritative response on whether Firebase is just as accessible and responsive in all of China as it is throughout the rest of the world - Or if it is not.

It should really be a simple question - Either you're going to end up with someone not going with your service; or you'll end up with someone going with your service and then demanding a refund because you gave a completely unacceptable, non-comprehensive answer to the question.

Thomas, David,

The list of affected apps is on the linked page provided. It is indeed authoritative. There are no known disruptions to Firebase in China, as indicated in the report.

Since access is determined by the Chinese government and they don't report to Google, it's the most authoritative it can be.  That doesn't mean China can't change their minds at any time.

well, the report does have gaping holes in it, such as Google Maps oversight.

also, are there distributed servers in china *within* the great firewall, such that latency is reasonable? I guess the only way is to build a test app and try it myself.

Is anyone on this list actually in China, or any firebase users you can refer to there?

chinaman here:),trying firebase for a couple of days
it's working in china currently but not stable
i'm adding a counter using firebase to my blog
1. gstatic is blocked, so firebase is unable to use from the start
<script src="https://www.gstatic.com/firebasejs/live/3.0/firebase.js"></script>
2. i tried to save a copy of firebase.js and all google related scripts(eg. google fonts) to local, it's now working, but sometimes the counter shows correct result in about one second, sometimes you have to wait or the result never shows up
