Project upgraded to the blaze plan due to activity in the google cloud platform console

I do nothing and received an alert.

So scary, why is it automatically upgraded?

Hi Mike,

Google maps recently made a change that causes accounts to auto upgrade if Maps is enabled on a project. As far as we can tell, this should not result in any unwanted charges (the change will revert if you incur any charges, unless you upgrade the account manually).

We understand this is confusing. We're working with Maps to fully understand this issue and we will try to update you once we know more.

Hi Mike, here's the official comms posted to our status dashboard; sharing here for others affected by these issues.

Google Maps Platform changed their service to require a billing account as of July 16, 2018, as announced on May 2, 2018. To prevent your maps service from being disabled, the Maps team attached a temporary billing account to your project.

As a result, some Firebase projects appeared to be upgraded to the Blaze plan. This was not entirely accurate, and all affected projects are still free (restricted to free Spark usage).

This temporary billing account WILL NOT generate any charges and will be removed if you use any service (Firebase or Cloud) which would incur a cost (at which time Maps APIs will become disabled for your project).

If you want to get your project out of this temporary state, you have two choices here: You can disable the Google Map APIs for your project or you can upgrade to a full billing account using the Maps Platform upgrade flow which will keep the $200 free usage each month, if you qualified for that promo.

We recognize that we didn't coordinate well with the Maps team and failed to communicate this change effectively. Sorry for this. We'll work to do better in the future. More information on the Google Maps API changes are available at their website.

I faced a similar issue and have to downgrade everyday on our app. Pls look into the matter or else I may have to change the maps API on our application. Our startup is too small and cannot afford a full fledged API charges as of now. Once we are afloat I can accept and incur any charges thrown at us but not at the moment. I do not appreciate a company like google troubling small developers like this. We thought the job of company like google is to help out small developers.

Atharva,

You can't use Maps for free, so if you enable that API on a Firebase project, then it is automatically upgraded. Best answer here is probably to split your Maps and Firebase into separate projects so you can continue to use both, and keep Firebase services for free.
