Hello everybody,

A new version of FeResPost is available (version 4.5.6).

A big bug in the reading of XDB result files has been ficed. (This bug appeared in previous version 4.5.5.)

Thanks for the fast fix, I almost installed 4.5.5 for my review of the suitability of FeResPost for my company (GKN Fokker Aerospace, the former Fokker Aircraft). Your install instructions are great, getting it running was a joy. The examples are great too, immediate satisfaction factor is very high. The examples are not trivial, I like that too!. So far, the review is very positive. Renaud you do GOOD WORK.

Hello Hugo,

I am glad tyou like FeResPost. I also enjoy developing it, and started its development about 15 years ago because I had the feeling that something was missing in standard post-processing solutions.

Do not hesitate to promote FeResPost in your company, and outside your company if you think it is useful.

I hope you installed last version 4.5.6 and not 4.5.5, because there was a big bug in 4.5.5!

Regards,

Renaud

Thank you for your nice reply. I anticipate with some anxiety my puting FeResPost through bigger tests though, we do have 2 GB XDB result files with us now for a number of years, ... they may find the weak spot  of N^2 vs Nlog(N) in any function if expect. WIll keep you posted how that goes. Promoting has started, and python is sexy within the company at the moment, so that may help.

Hugo,

The reading of large XDB files has been tested. It works with 64 bits versions of the binaries, but not with 32 bits versions. It is a limitation of C++ compiler, and not of FeResPost source code.

Hello Hugo,

I have investigated a little more in detail the problem of accessing large XDB file with FeResPost 32bits libraries.

What I wrote in my last message is not totally correct. In earlier versions of FeResPost, the access to large XDB (or Samcef FAC) files was possible. But it is no longer possible with recent versions of FeResPost. The reason for this, is that I switched to an newer version of GNU C++ compiler. And the reason for this change is that I needed a more recent version to compiler libraries for recent versions of ruby (versions >= 2.4*).

It seems that 32bits GNU standard library no longer supports the random access to files larger than 2Gb. (See the link below.)
This may be in line with C++ specifications, but I consider it as a regression and a shame.

As most computers are today 64 bits computers, this is in general not a huge problem i. I see one exception however: when the COM component is used from 32 bits excel, it may be interesting to access XDB files larger than 2Gb. (In my compoany, we suse 32bits Microsoft Office.) Therefore, I decided to produce Windows 32 bits binaries with version 3.4.5 of GNU compiler. These are now distributed with other binaries of version 4.5.6.( Of course no FeResPost binaries are produced for ruby versions >= 2.4*.)

Future versions of the User Manual will contain information about these problems.

Regards,

Renaud

I've come to this project expecting to have the .NET directories populated, but they contain nothing.
Also: Is this project on GitHub or similar so that help / updates may be provided (As part of the LPGL Rules) ?

Hi Smurf,

I am a little surprised that you do not find the .NET libraries. Are you sure you downloaded the right file?

I checked the content of  FeResPost_NET_4.5.6.7z file that I just downloaded, and the file contains three .NET librarie. Please check the download section of FeResPost WEB site:

I never tried to GitHub for FeResPost distribution. But this does not prevent you from trying to modify FeResPost, as the sources are also available, and the LGPL license allows you to do it.

Renaud

I can see where I went wrong..
I downloaded the Windows version(s), and they have a .Net directory within them, completely missed the .Net only at the top !!
