Our lakes - Our protectors

Dear All,

We all have witnessed the recent floods and we may think its Nature's fury. The real culprits are us. In reality it is Man that has caused the tragedy. We have occupied the lakes and built apartments and the water has just come to its natural location. 

Many times we made an attempt to save Hyderabad lakes from encroachment and we wanted to begin with saving lakes in our area. What we expected was people's support and presence and we did not get that. We still went ahead and tried to do some work but what we got what was resistance and threats from encroachers and vested interests. We did as much as we could but lack of people's interest was demotivating.

Our silence has cost all of us and will continue to cost us if we don't act. After all, Governments will do what we ask of it.

There are 3 lakes in the Nizampet area and I believe some organizations like Ujwal Bharat Seva Sangh and SOUL( Save our Urban Lakes) want to work to save the lakes in our area. Next time when any organization comes forward please do come out and support them.

Some of you know that we have a Lake in Nizampet Road called Kindi Kunta Cheruvu which is behind Nagarjuna Homes. Two gentlemen Pradeep and Arun on a mission of protecting a lake in their area, are working on the Kothaguda lake restoration and we could learn from their experience. Pls see the attached Pdf and word document related to Kothaguda Nerala lake. We need to prepare such documents for our lake as well.

Dear All,

Do you know there is a lake in Nizampet road called Kindi kunta ? It
is on the road opp Kolan Raghav Reddy function hall. Two years ago the
Kindi kunta Lake which we all wanted to repair and convert into a
beautiful Lake is now slowly disappearing. Full scale encroachment is
happening, the lake which was about 7 acres and is now reduced to 4
acres. A group of us visited the MLA and asked him to take immediate
action and atleast protect the remaining part. We suggested that
drainage be diverted and a walking track be immediately constructed
around the lake so that there is no further encroachment and damage.

When we invite the MLA next week to visit the lake please join in large number.

Since 3 years, we have been fighting to save the Kindi Kunta (in
Nizampet road) and Hydernagar lakes from encroachment. In the last six
months, we formed an active task force and are pushing the MLA,
Corporator to work on the lakes. There has not been much progress.

We are intensifying our efforts and in the next 1 month we are
planning to visit Zonal Commissioner and District Collector multiple
times.

Yesterday we met the Deputy Commissioner and he says that there is no lake at all. It is suspicious and makes us feel that there is a bigger conspiracy by some elements to encroach the total lake? We have past letters from the Government that the lake is indeed Government land. We also have google data. We are meeting the Commissioner tomorrow with this data. If he doesn't relent, we will approach the courts.

Our hard work is finally giving results. Work on restoring the Kindi Kunta lake has begun.

The MLA through our Federation clarified that 7 acres out of 8 acres will be restored. He assured that the remaining 1 acre of Lake which is encroached will be retrieved from the encroacher. Lets hope he keeps his word.

We waited for two months to see if the authorities will keep their word and restore Kindikunta lake. To our dismay, we were being hoodwinked.

Hence Forum to Improve Things (FIT) filed a PIL in the High Court and the Cheif Justice ordered the District Collector to personally visit the Lake and ensure the Lake is protected.
