Hi everyone!

I'm having some trouble with a new computer and new FED devices. I have it all set up and my code shows no errors, but arduino won't recognize my FED device to flash the code. The port option under tools is greyed out, so I'm not sure what to do now. I talked to some people and redownloaded Arduino legacy, and made sure I had the right adafruit and arduino boards downloaded, but this didn't seem to help.

Any ideas?

Hey Lydia, quick questions, (1) are you plugging the micro usb cable to the port that is on the feather board (see image, port inside magenta circle)? I’ve mistakenly plugged it into the charging port many times! (2) are you putting the FED in bootloader mode by double clicking the button on the feather board?

Best,
Victor

Hi! Thank you! I didn't realize there were two separate ports to plug in. That fixed it!

Hi everyone!

I am currently a brand-new user of the FED3 device, as my lab is trying to incorporate its use into behavioral studies combined with fiber photometry. I do not have much experience with using Arduino software and coding, but I am slowly learning by watching videos. I have a few questions and would love any input/advice that might be helpful to solve these current issues and would appreciate any advice for future situations.

So far, I was able to follow computer set up videos on how to flash code on the device, but I am still having trouble connecting the board to the software, as the "port" is not recognized. I am using the USB cable that was provided with the devices, I have used different Adafruit boards (from multiple FED3 devices), and I have also used different USB connections on the laptop, but the port is still not being identified. I have downloaded all the libraries, inserted the link in the preferences for the Adafruit index, and have all the board installers in the software, and I am also plugging the cable into the feather board side, not the charging port near the power switch. The board comes up under the tools section as "Adafruit Feather M0 (SAMD21)", but again no port is recognized and it cannot connect. The yellow light comes on and there is flashing of the red light, but that is about it. I do not have any intention of modifying the programs at the moment (so I do not think this is imperative) but I would love any input/advice on the matter!

Hi Jade,
Are you "double clicking" the little button to put it in boot-loader mode?  When you do it correctly the red LED will "breathe", see example video here of what this mode looks like on the Adalogger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ce02eltnIw

You can also follow the Adafruit instructions and see if that helps:  https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-feather-m0-adalogger/setup

Lastly,if you're seeing the board come up under the tools tab you might be fine, have you tried flashing code to it?  Hope this helps! -Lex

Hi Lex!

Just wanted to follow up and confirm that putting it in bootloader mode helped resolve my issue! I did not realize that it needed to be in this mode in order for it to be recognized by the software. Thank you so much for the help as well as everyone else who has emailed be privately. It has been most helpful!

Thank you again,
-JS
