Hi guys,

I'm trying to do a smoke simulation in Floor 1 of a building. I have smoke detectors in every room and have "markings" (colored tan/brown dots in pic) along the hallway that measure HRR per area &vol, CO, Soot, etc. and I have the following errors:

floor 111.JPG
Errors:
1. ERROR: Reposition DEVC No.84, ID = HRRArea_Mk1
FDS cannot determine which boundary cell to assign.
-> I tried solving this by placing HHRArea_Mk1 device near the ceiling/obstruction (12.67ft) while every other "marking" remained where they were at ~5ft. Didn't work.

2. ERROR: FDS was improperly set-
up - FDS stopped (CHID: Floor_1_Rm1310_SD32_10min)

*lists all smoke detectors and says "no activation"

Question: How do I solve these problems?
Seems simple, but been working on it for 2 hours now...

I attached my file below.

Thanks so much!

Oops here's my file. This was done on revit then imported as obstructions on pyrosim.

One approach to troubleshooting errors on DEVC locations is to remove the devices causing problems from the input file and run FDS with T_END=0. Open the Smokeview file, turn on the grids and grid locations (typing g in Smokeview will cycle various options), and move the grids to where you want to place the DEVC. Use the grid locations based on how your OBST snap to the grid to set the DEVC location.

Hi there,
I really appreciate you commenting here.

I tried to follow what you said:
1. I took off all smoke detectors
2. Simulate to time=0
3. Open smokeview file

Questions:
1. How do I turn on grids and grid locations? Then moving them? That's a step I'm unfamiliar with.
I tried searching through every panel in the smv file for grids. I also tried going to the https://www.thunderheadeng.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/SMV_User_Guide.pdf SMV user guide and CNTRL+F grid to see if there were any instructions for that.
I pressed g without accessing the grids and nothing came up.

2. Just a general question, do you know why smoke detectors aren't activating when their properties are set to activate?

Toggle "g" or ...

Hi Randy,
I don't know what's up with mine but I toggled "g", right-clicked to see options, etc. in my .smv file and for some reason nothing pops up as you have in your screenshot (which I'm thankful for that you did in the first place to show me).

Is it because I'm not in the smokeview file? If you saw in my earlier email I had a screenshot of my .smv file. That's the file where I'm supposed to toggle "g", correct?
I also asked my prof. to try the same thing but she got nothing.

I attached my pyrosim file if you could possibly take a look. It's a simple "Run FDS" click and you can see the results by t=0.

Thanks a lot,
Caryle

Looks to me like that was Pyrosim or some other CAD program.
