Sacred Harp Revision: Call for Song Submissions

Hello singing friends,

I'm writing to pass along the following call for submissions from the committee revising The Sacred Harp: 1991 Edition. On behalf of the committee, I'd like to encourage each of you to consider submitting your own tunes. You're also welcome to send in historical tunes you think the committee should consider including. Here's the call:

Submit Your Music to the Committee Revising The Sacred Harp! 

The Sacred Harp Publishing Company has approved a revision of The Sacred Harp. The book has been revised every generation since its first publication in 1844 and has always included the music of living composers. 

You are welcome to submit your own tunes or new or old music written by others for consideration. 

Music should be in the styles of The Sacred Harp. 

To submit songs, send them by email to revi...@sacredharp.com or by mail to: Music Committee, P.O. Box 4243, Huntsville, AL 35815. 

The committee also welcomes your input on any other aspect of the revision of the songbook.

I've also attached a PDF version of the call to this message. Please feel free to print this out and distribute it at singings in your area. I'll also be happy to answer any questions you might have.

Thanks for the notification.  Of course, I plan to submit some of mine (.pdf, e-mail to the specified address).  I would like to submit tunes that both the committee and I would find interesting and not waste our time with others.  Would you be willing and able to provide some general insight into the committee's interests, such as easier vs. more challenging, major vs. minor modes, short vs. long, plain vs. fuging, etc.?  Thanks for whatever information you can provide to steer us toward submissions for which the committee would consider its deliberations time well spent.

Hello Randy, et al.,

The short answer to your question is that the revision committee is interested in what you think is your best and most appropriate music for The Sacred Harp. 

You should feel free to submit any tunes that are in keeping with the styles of music in The Sacred Harp. This could include easier and more challenging songs (though probably not songs that are more challenging than challenging songs in The Sacred Harp), major and minor tunes, short and long tunes (though, again, not tunes that are longer than the longer tunes in The Sacred Harp), plain and fuging tunes (not to mention tunes in other styles found in the book), tunes in any of the seven modes of time in The Sacred Harp, etc. The committee will acknowledge receipt of your submissions, and will review and sing through all music we receive.
