I have a question about the Hymn Tune Index. I was not able to do a Boolean search. That is, I tried searching twice and it reset the search rather than search the results. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Then I learned from AI that Nicholas Temperley had given permission for his son David to make the database available on his website. But all I found was a fragment of a relational database, such that the tune the information linked to could not be identified.

Can anyone help with this?

John, I do not believe the HTI supports the type of searching you describe. I've used it many times and a new search always resets the search. What exactly were you trying to do? The person who took over editorial responsibility for the index is Joseph Herl at Concordia University, Nebraska, who worked closely with Nicholas. His email address is Josep...@cune.edu. However, I believe he is only involved with the content and not the technical side, but he might be able to put you in touch with someone at the University of Illinois library. Anyway, there are instructions on each type of search (Tune, Text, Source, and Composer) through links on the main search type for each type. Links to each search page are at the bottom of the main page:

Hope this helps!

Well, just to be clear, let's say I search for all works by Daniel Read. And then I want to know which of them are in Southern Harmony. There's a button that says "Refine Search". This usually means that it applies the new condition to your search results. But instead it starts over and I see all the songs by everyone in Southern Harmony. - John

I'm a bit confused. The Hymn Tune Index only covers books up to 1820, so you can't search for The Southern Harmony because it's not indexed in the Hymn Tune Index.

Regardless, you cannot do what you want to do in the Hymn Tune Index. Each type of search is completely separate from the others. Refine search doesn't, unfortunately, do what you are expecting it to do.

Just a follow up. Joseph Herl told me a couple of years ago that they hope to update the search engine and expand the coverage to post-1820 tune books, but, as yet, have not found the necessary funding. He told me no to hold my breath.

Meanwhile, some of us have been entering data using HTI formats when constructing databases for post-1820 tunebooks. In my case, it's limited to selected data from a few publications (like Compilation of Genuine Church Music ed. 2 and The Hesperian Harp).
