I can see the use for that. It seems to me that such functionality would ideally go into the GOTM-FABM coupling layer. It would make less sense in FABM itself, as this phenomenon is specific to 1D column models, and FABM configuration files should be portable as-is to e.g. 3D models where such a parameterisation of horizontal advection would not make sense.
I think this functionality could be added with some targeted changes in gotm_fabm.F90 and gotm_fabm_input.F90, more or less like the way we currently handle relaxation of pelagic tracers. Depending on your Fortran skills, you might want to try your hand at implementing and testing such changes (if you do that in a clean way, you could offer them for inclusion in GOTM master as a pull request). Alternatively, I’d consider this a feature request in search of a volunteer and/or funding.
