Dear all,
It seems the APPS chairs were not getting these mails, because they were sent to the wrong address
Also SPECIEs board members probably did not get them either, because only members can mail to that list.

Anyway, to summarise, so far the proposed speakers are

Jürgen Schmidhuber http://people.idsia.ch/~juergen/

And we want your candidates on or before MONDAY 11th December

The text of the original mail was as follows:

Hi all,

I would also like to recommend Risto Mikkulainen, which is in the
Evolutionary Deep Learning --- (a term I called a few years ago), which
is a hot area, and also connect our EC with NN and machine learning
together.

In GECCO this year, many papers in this direction were submitted the
Evolutionary Machine Learning Track (I was chairing it), including many
paper from GP, GAs/PSO/DE, etc.

Cheers
Meng

Ciao Anna,

Every year in early March (I suppose on Darwin's birthday) a colleague
of mine, a 'real' evolutionist, organizes a 'Darwin Day' where evolution
is discussed from different viewpoints.

Marco Dorigo was a speaker a couple of years ago.

I have contacted him asking if they could be interested in hosting a
talk about evolutionary computation in 2018, as Evo* is going to be held
in Parma.
He told me that, unfortunately, this year's program (about Diversity) is
already set and that he will consider a contribution from our community
"in a year in which the topic fits it better" (we actually deal with
diversity, but I did not want to argue on this...). However he is
available for publicizing Evo* at the event, which is good locally
anyway, even if it will be probably too late to attract new
participants.
I also asked him to suggest a possible name for a plenary given by
someone who is studying natural evolution and just a few days ago, as I
met him by chance, he tpold me he had someone to suggest. I have mailed
him on Friday (it was a holiday in Italy), and I am waiting for his
reply.

Please keep a spot on the candidate's list ...

Stefano

Dear all,

So far we've received the following speaker suggestions (alphabetically)

1.-Pedro Domingos https://www.cs.washington.edu/people/faculty/pedrod. Author of The master algorithm. You can see him talk here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8J4uefCQMc

2.-Marcos Nadal:  expert on aesthetics. can provide a deeper understanding on research about aesthetics in general and
psychology of aesthetics. He worked on computer modelling of aesthetics. He can provide a general talk that includes psychological approaches to aesthetics, neuroaesthetics and computer modelling. He won, on 2014, the prestigious Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten prize of "International Association of Empirical Aesthetics"

3.- Risto Miikkulainen https://www.cs.utexas.edu/~risto/ He is in Evolutionary Deep Learning, which is a hot area, and also connect our EC with NN and machine learning together. An interview with him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyDMbfCARW8

4.- Una-May O'Reilly. https://people.csail.mit.edu/unamay/ Although you will know her as one of the pioneers of GP, she's now doing interesting work in Machine Learning using techniques like LSH and Deep Learning in fields such as medicine, education and cyber security. You can see her here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPIFxfpB_7w

5.- Jürgen Schmidhuber http://people.idsia.ch/~juergen/ One of the inventors of LSTM RNNs. See him here at a TEDx talk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y7PLaxXUrs&t=10s

Evolutionary psychology with a very high level of research (and a huge quantity of publications). One of his lines of research was to use evolutionary and adaptive simulation to music creation and modelling of human mate choice (this can be very interesting to evo* attenders). Moreover, it is one of the pioneers in AI and music with the editing of a very famous book: "Music and connectionism". The evolutionary simulation research line is not new (no new publications from 2007) but he continues to develop research on human mate choice and music.

Can we first hear your choice (for 2 speakers, in order of preference) on a personal level and see if we can reach a consensus like that?
(otherwise we will weigh by conference/track, as per the usual procedure)

Cheers,

A

Dear all,

My personal opinion on the invited speakers has been always that they have to be inspiring and thought-provoking but not closely connected to EC (and actually I find that it is often the fact that there is only a loose connection to EC what makes these talks fresh and interesting). For this reason, my personal choice tends to be firstly around options #2 and #4. Now, these two seem somewhat close to each other in a thematic sense, so maybe I would opt for #4 (for the music aspect, but as Anna indicates, I'd keep an eye open for what he could comment on human mating). As for the other speaker, the remaining options gravitate around machine learning. Among these, I find attractive #1 and #4: #1 because of the master algorithm issue and how it can connect to future AI and the technological singularity, which can be food for thought; #2 because we may hear about a lot of interesting applications (as an aside, it is important in our field to have a female speaker, even more so when the choice is so much scientifically deserved).

Those were my two cents. Cheers,

Carlos

Regarding your comment: "actually I find that it is often the fact that there is only a loose connection to EC what makes these talks fresh and interesting"
I fully agree, and would like to add that this year we have received very few suggestions, even though we waited a week after the deadline. Perhaps we are running out of imagination? :-(

@Anna: It was hard to find it, but there is a short interview of Pievani given in English:

But you are right about Vallortigara: I couldn't find any talk in English from him.

Other than that, I (as evoknow chair) would go for Pievani or Miikkulainen.

Cheers,

Giovanni

I was actually looking for videos in English but I could not find any...

Prof. Vallortigara does speak English for sure (see his CV).

I would say the same for Telmo Pievani, but I was a bit surprised to see
him talk in Italian even at TEDx (even if those were Italian events).

As a personal vote (Meng has already voted so I don't know how this
works for EvoIASP) I would go for a more technical and a less
computing-related talks.

Just to make things a bit simpler I would agree with Meng on Risto
Miikulainen.

For the less computing-related talk, Telmo Pievani is a great
communicator (hopefully he does not ask a fee for making a presentation,
given the huge number of presentations he gives and popular science
books he writes).

Otherwise, I would go with Meng also for the othre speaker (Marcos
Nadal) in order to have a single vote for EvoIASP.

Hi again,

Can I ask you to please enter your votes using this spreadsheet:

(in this round I'm asking for your *personal* vote, i.e. not for your track)

We also ave three more suggestions for speakers:

president of the Italian Society of Evolutionary Biology
#8 Giorgio Vallortigarahttp://r.unitn.it/en/cimec/abc/abc-team-members, known for his studies on the evolution of behaviour.
#9 Katie Bentley. She was going  to be speaker in PPSN '16, but could not make it. She has a CS background but does cool stuff with cells http://www.igp.uu.se/research/vascular-biology/katie-bentley/

you can find them in the spreadsheet too.

For those of you who have voted by mail I've entered your choices already (but please check in case I have made a mistake)

Thanks again!

Dear Manuel,

I am sure that people who know me better will be wondering now how come I am not threatening to kill you and make myself a bag with your ears. The reason is simple: unbeknownst to you, we had established a rule for those suggestions that are late to being late.
The rule states as follows:

Proposers of invited speakers who are late to the late deadline will be charged a fee which will consist of inviting everybody on this list to a cup of wine of sufficient quality during the Evo* conference, unless the proposed speaker is a woman, in which case the fee will be waived.

The concept "sufficient quality" will be set as "the highest proposed by any of the recipients of the invitation".

Non-wine drinkers will be offered a suitable replacement of their choice.

Let me warn you that there are 39 people listed, including yourself.

I am sure at least 38 people are very happy just now.

Best,
A*

Dear Anna and others,

Sorry for the delay. I have also added as an option Holger Hoos
http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~hoos/
https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/staffmembers/holger-hoos#tab-1

Holger has worked on automatic algorithm design and configuration for SAT,
winning several prizes in the international SAT competition, with IBM about
improving CPLEX, hyper-parameter optimization of machine learning and other
algorithms and problems. He is an excellent and amusing speaker who has given
keynotes at several major conferences including GECCO. More recently, he has
helped Donald Knuth to tune Knuth's algorithms for the next chapter in The Art
of Computer Programming, which is devoted to combinatorial optimization. He
also loves Italy and speaks italian, so he may have an additional motivation
for accepting :)

Cheers,

Manuel.

That's a shame! I'm sure it would have looked good in my collection...

Can I get the fee waived if I propose yet another candidate, this time a woman?

Yes you can, but only if you remove the first suggestion. Rules are rules!

I voted for three candidates just in case, so no harm done if it is too late to
add new candidates.

Raia Hadsell

She works at DeepMind in London.
Fantastic speaker and fantastic presentation. Very interesting work with some
potential applications from evolutionary (hyper-)optimization.

Cheers,

Manuel.
