Yeah Phillip, you cited real world examples of academic autocracy, and that autocracy is on the public dime, via student loans. STEM is absolutely necessary for human survival, yet, the ability to think clearly is not to be undervalued, when even the claims by scientists go awry and get the human species nowhere. Science expertise did badly with Covid, with attaining fusion, have up till now been slow with getting medical achievements, etc. I can sum it up with saying, nice smart phones aren't just compensation for not beating diseases. Trillions have been spent over say, 40 years of basic research, so I ask cynically, where's out gear? I will still read science news every day, because, Compulsion.

  I agree with the post that “Universities are the autocratic kings of censorship and repression”. I have given only seven instances among thousands!! Alost everyday they are EXPELLING or ostracizing somebody who happened to be truthful  but have findings in disagreement with their “fixations”.  Fanatic fixations to intangible un-evidential ideas and ideologies cause zealotry and bigotry. This is a psychological disorder that may eventually lead to personality disorder. In the Augustinian Western context, especially in the backdrop of the American “Two Great Awakenings” it is a very complex pagan [Pan-Gaia-n = earthling] manifestation of un-awakened, kundalini/reptilian consciousness. The one and ONLY remedy for that malady is an Augustinian Awakening in the academia and the media (https://www.midwestaugustinians.org/conversion-of-st-augustine). Those who have witnessed “spirit possessions” first hand attest that many of the body-languages (especially the quizzical eye movements) of the members of the Western Acade-Media Pagans (WAMP) correspond fully with symptoms of “spirit possessions”!!!!!  It has become a common cultural pattern.  Too bad. Universities are the autocratic kings of censorship and repression. It is no mistake that the most tyrannical of presidents Wilson and Obama arrived from the realm of professorship. I would add FDR and his internment camps, but he did free more peeps, than he imprisoned to say the least, so good on him. 

So what to do? My part is easy! Wait for errors on the side of the ruling class, that affects the middle class, and when enough uncorrected problems pile up, people, naturally will react. Repression from social media and the banks will be one thing that initiates a back-reaction (right outta optical physics).

If the Dems do well with economic recovery, then it will be sunny skies for them.  Once Kamala gets in gear, we will see what her leadership takes us?

I disagree. The scientific response to the covid pandemic has been amazing. A year ago nothing was known about this virus and within a year vaccines are being distributed. That is a very remarkable development, far quicker than the development of vaccines for other diseases. In many ways it rivals the speed with which the Manhattan project developed the atomic bomb.

I suspect the reason you and Philip call universities autocracies is because they tend to fail out people like you. My contact with what Philip presents as science informs me he is completely delusional. Universities, and by extension editors of scientific  journals are gatekeepers. The process is meant to provide tests for the scientific or intellectual adequacy of publications. This does not guarantee what is published is correct, but that is later decided by others who try to repeat experiments or work on reported developments. If these do not lead to further results the scientific claim becomes a dead end. Universities provide tests students must pass to earn degrees, and further on requirements to hold chairs at a department. It is not always fair, and a very competent scientists who spends a year working down a blind ally may find that even if they abandon that and admit error that they are completely out of the game. However, it keeps people who are completely incompetent out.

I would guess that Everett's (Bryce De Witt's, John Wheeler) many worlds may be possible, in the sense that if Oxford's David Deutsch is accurate, then massive computations, once perfected quantum in QC computers and improved; will succeed because their computations occur in 'close by' parallel universes. Other than that, the discussion may be considered by a utilitarian like me, pedantic, Philip.

Doing then, the MWI dance, helps, not, our specie in any way. For imagination, it's da bomb!  Cross-worlds, there are, I have imagined, the South African Boskops of 10K ago, with their huge cranial cases, who through luck of destiny, became the dominant species because of their giant intellects. Now they were shorter than us regular H. Sapiens, but heck, they might be the UFO's Grays. Now, why are they so obsessed with our butts? Crossing worldlines for a colonoscopy of this parallel species, us!

On 'scientist worship,' I understand it, especially, when somebody on the research team comes up something that really helps us! But a lot of scientists, deliberately ignore, seemingly, related studies in what has been termed collective intelligence, or as, "The wisdom of crowds."  Moreover, they undervalue behavior of the common folk; like curiosity, wisdom, occupational experiences, persistence, resourcefulness, rapid adaptation, as being traits exclusively effused by themselves, rather than a common species heritage.

Your promotion, is seemingly that scientists cannot  let their emotions prevail in pursuit of studies. Yet, in the 20th century, by evidence and policy the Eugenicists and the Lysenkoist are proven example of emotion and group loyalty (to scientists, science societies), thwarting honest study and peer review. In the 80's we had the nuclear winter scare by Carl Sagan and the MIT physicists, siding with the Soviet propaganda (not that Nuke Winter isn't accurate, just relevant to human survival), after a nuke war, because of the effectiveness of the diminished survival rate from just fire and radiation. Meaning, you can't kill me twice, so yeah, our Pershing Missiles are going in NATO to match your SS 18's and 20's, sorry Mister Brezhnev, tear down the wall.

In Britain when first analyzed, the idea there was to push herd immunity but that seemed specious now. As far as the efficaciousness of lockdowns, Conservative Florida has (in real life) done immensely better survival-wise, than Liberal NY, CA, etc. It doesn't appear ideological, merely wiser. However, once the absurdity of the quantum state was accepted as a necessary representation of reality, and not an abstract mathematical tool to calculate the probabilities of measurement results, the imaginary probabilities became as real as the observed measurement results. Augustine had a full 180 degree turn from his pagan Greco-Roman scholastic past to his non-pagan transformed consciousness. He then pulled the West out of Greco-Roman superstitions and created for the first time in history a rational atmosphere conducive to explorations in science and technology.          In an OP-ED of Jan. 19, 202 Los Angeles Times, Richard T. Hughes, exhibits his ignorance of this fact and he misses the forest for the trees. He reports under the title: “The ferocious last gasps of the religion of Christian America” that Donald Trump’s presidency has baffled the majority of Americans for four years. “What should we make of decisive Christian support for an American politician whose life and priorities are fundamentally anti-Christian? Why would elected members of any party support legal maneuvers that would undermine American democracy? How could insurrection against the people’s government be configured as patriotism? As Trump’s reign implodes, these anomalies betray the last gasps of a long-standing American religion that is now passing away — the religion of Christian America sustained by a corrupted version of Christianity.”

      Pagans with un-awakened consciousness have infiltrated everywhere—pulpits and pews, academia and media, businesses and bureaucracies-- from the White House to the out-house. This began in great earnestness ever since the lazes faire administration of President Dwight Eisenhower (the last truly and fully American President?). The culture war is the forest that Richard Hughes misses and the largely pagan media fosters. Descartes and Driesh have been unable to solve the third-person self problem (how to build a self-reproducing machine). That problem has been solved in Computer Science, notably by the second recursion theorem of Kleene. The basic idea is simple: to get a program P computing some  computable function or transformation T on itself, you first write the program D(x) = F('x(x)')', and then apply D to itself:

D(‘D’) = F('D(‘D’)’). You need a special quote function handling the quoted variable. So P = D(‘D’).

Unfortunately, the first person self is more complex to figure out, but is given by an idea of Theaetetus which … was refuted by Socrates, but redeemed, somewhat, by Gödel’s incompleteness theorem. I don’t think that the concept of matter can help here, be it dark or not dark. I don’t believe in matter at all. Even just looking at experimental physics, I see only people measuring some measurable numbers and inferring relations on them, but this is what the universal numbers do already in their observable part (based on arithmetic as seen from inside, which is defined through the variant of knowledge proposed by Theaetetus, and shown to exist necessarily by the Gödel-Löb incompleteness theorem (and its important generalisation by Solovay, captured by two modal logics of self-reference).

Mathematical logic + the Indexical Digital Mechanist hypothesis (in philosophy or mind or theology) transform the antic Dream Argument into a rigorous argument showing that seeing or observing, or measuring cannot prove any ontological reality. All the measurement experience are “dreamable”, making their mention invalid for any ontological purpose. They are no better than the “knowing table” proof of the existence of table or matter, which I have heard so many times that I dream often of people using it to claim that a table is real and should not be doubted!

I am not sure in which sense you take “paganism”. It has been sometimes used for the pre-christian popular religion/superstition, that’s right, but it has also been used by the christian radicals to dismiss the entire work of the Neoplatonists (which are quite 'anti-superstition' and even 'anti-public-revelation’, which always became Argument per Authority (not valid!)).

I think Augustin did grasp the Plato-Plotinus point, and helped the christians to not completely forget about Plato. Dark or not, I prefer to not assume any primitive matter, (nor time, energy, space, …). Matter, or its appearance is what I want to explain, without infinite regression.
