In the February 27 2020 Astrophysical Journal evidence is presented that in the distant past in a super giant galaxy 400 million light years away there was an explosion that released 100 billion times as much energy as the sun will during its entire lifetime.

This does indicate AGNs can occur somewhat late in cosmic evolution.
