Sure, I agree, because all the oldies did the best they could, and like us, often fail big time. They had trouble feeding the kids for most of human development.
Having said that, I still look for rational technical answers for even some spiritual goals, and longings. So some of the thinkers I have learned about have scientific philosophical interests, computing, math, etc. Tipler, Leslie, Moravec, Prisco, and lately, Alexey Turchin. Whatever works best for ourselves, and our species.

Cruel, egocentric, prone to smiting, megalomanical,...maybe. I hope we
don't run into one (or become one).

You cannot read part of the Bible allegorically and the rest of it
literally; if you believe in the virgin birth of Jesus, his crucifixion
and resurrection, and the depiction of the Great Judgment at the end
times you must also believe that God is sadistic, brutal, vengeful,
