Most people in urban India think that the city is congested and there are traffic jams everywhere. Urban people in the metro cities can definitely relate to this. In addition the congestion, there is a lack of parking place, followed by pedestrians on the road and slow moving buses and three wheelers. This causes major travel delay and is not desired by any motorists. However, what most people fail to understand is the simple concept that city is made not for the motorist, but for the pedestrian, the cyclist and the bus rider. Interestingly enough, the government of India has also failed to understand this simple concept. While cities in Europe, which are deemed to be the most friendly cities, have a huge portion of their land dedicated to pedestrians only; Indian cities are demanding more and more space for cars and transportation. Many of the biggest research facilities in transportation has dedicated a huge portion of their research to the development of better road and bridges while forgetting to develop the transportation facilities like Metro, Rapid bus service, Cycle lane, Pedestrian walkways.
However, with the advent of the knowledge that with the current population of the country and the rising GDP and the increased motorisation of the cities, it is now calculated that providing for all cars to move smoothly is physically impossible. Passenger movement is now targeted rather than vehicle movement. While most people think that such development is anti-motorist, it is to be pointed out that even in cities in Europe; people have at least 2 cars per household with all the restrictions. The cities become great for walking and travel becomes a pleasure.
Multiple researches are now being conducted in areas of Public transportation, Neighbourhood friendly cities and walking cities.
