Hello all,

It's with a mix of emotions that I'm writing today to announce my decision to step down as co-chair of Kubernetes SIG etcd. Being part of this journey since etcd became a SIG in November 2023 has been my absolute privilege and a truly rewarding experience. The past two years have been incredible – working alongside the other SIG leads, we've poured our hearts into building a vibrant and sustainable etcd community.

As I look to the future, I'm very pleased to nominate Siyuan to take over my role as co-chair. Siyuan isn't just an excellent developer; she's been a force of nature within our SIG. She's not only driving significant features like livez/readyz, downgrade (3.5 downgrade support, 3.6 test), and feature gate, but has also been instrumental in our robustness tests, test framework, releases, and code reviewing. Beyond her deep contributions to etcd, Siyuan also contributes significantly to other Kubernetes SIGs like SIG Architecture and SIG API Machinery. This broader perspective is a great asset to etcd as a K8s SIG. Furthermore, Siyuan is continuously mentoring new community members, both within our formal etcd mentorship programs and informally, in etcd and kubernetes, fostering the next generation of contributors. Siyuan works very well with the other SIG etcd leads, other Kubernetes SIGs, and community members, showing great teamwork. Her consistent presence and insightful contributions in our triage and bi-weekly meetings, and her engaging talks at various KubeCons, truly speak volumes about her dedication and passion. She's already doing the work, and doing it brilliantly, which shows she's more than qualified. I have no doubt she'll continue to work seamlessly with the other etcd leads, other SIGs, and the broader community, skillfully guiding etcd forward.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact current leads (etcd-mai...@googlegroups.com) and/or steering...@kubernetes.io about the nomination. Otherwise, the lazy consensus deadline will be in two weeks (June 2nd, 2025).

Please know that this isn't a goodbye to etcd or Kubernetes. I'm not leaving; I'll still be very much around, contributing and supporting in old and new ways. Thank you all for the trust you've placed in me and for being such an amazing community.

Best,
Wenjia

Wenjia it's been great to work together over the last couple of years, from the early days of our SIG’s formation through to the many milestones we’ve achieved as a team. Your commitment to community-building has helped rebuild the strong foundations etcd needs within the Kubernetes ecosystem. Your initiative and leadership for our mentorship programme has helped grow our contributor base and ensure we are more sustainable moving forward.

On that topic I want to echo your enthusiasm for Siyuan's nomination. Siyuan has already shown exceptional technical expertise, and a strong commitment to the SIG. It’s exciting to welcome her into the co-chair role, and I’m confident that etcd will continue to thrive under her guidance.

I'm especially glad to hear that you’ll still be around! On behalf of the rest of the team: thank you. We’re grateful for all you’ve done and look forward to what’s next, both for you and for the SIG.

Kind regards
James

Wenjia, thank you so much for your incredible leadership and dedication as co-chair of SIG etcd.
Your efforts in building this community and driving its success have been truly remarkable.
It's hard to imagine where we are without the mentorship program you spearheaded.
We're all incredibly grateful for your contributions.

I'm also very pleased to support Siyuan's nomination for the co-chair role.
As Wenjia highlighted, Siyuan's technical expertise,
extensive contributions to etcd and the wider Kubernetes ecosystem,
and her commitment to mentoring make her an outstanding candidate.
I have every confidence in her ability to effectively lead SIG etcd forward with the team.

Best regards,

I want to sincerely thank Wenjia for your contributions to the SIG-ETCD community since rejoining the etcd maintainer team in mid-2023. You have done excellent work organizing community meetings, supporting mentorship programs, and helping SIG-ETCD stay well connected with the broader Kubernetes ecosystem. Your efforts have been valuable to the project and are much appreciated.

I also want to acknowledge Siyuan’s contributions to the etcd project and appreciate her involvement in the community.

Wenjia, your work at SIG etcd is remarkable. As many have mentioned before, your enthusiasm for driving the community is one of the reasons why we have an increased and healthy number of contributors and a prosperous link to the Kubernetes community. As with any goodbye, it may be bittersweet, but I'm glad you'll be around. On a personal note, I'm very grateful for your work, which is a vital reason I started contributing to the project, stayed, and felt part of the community.

I also support Siyuan's candidacy as the co-chair's successor. She's demonstrated strong involvement in different areas of the project and deep involvement with the community. I'm looking forward to working with her in her new role.

Best,
Ivan
